Title: Easy, Inexpensive Tail Light Upgrade
Post by: frankenduck on October 29, 2012, 12:21:14 PM
K bike tail lighting is rather wimpy. Here's an easy inexpensive way to upgrade it by adding waterproof LED marker lights to the sides of the tail light lens.  Here's the end result:

What You'll Need

- Two of these (http://www.finditparts.com/products/439387/roadmaster-1827r).

- About 6" of double-sided tape that you can find at your local auto parts store. 3M product # 3615 Molding Tape is what I use.

.

- Hacksaw, Dremel or grinder

- Some rubbing alcohol

Step 1: Using a Dremel cutting wheel, hacksaw or whatever, trim the plastic off of the ends of the LED marker light until it is small enough to fit inside the outside areas of the tail light.  The one pictured is identical to the one above except that the plastic is clear.

Step 2: Use some rubbing alcohol to clean out the inside of the side of the tail light lens so that  the mounting surface for the double-sided tape is clean.

Step 3: Tape the LED marker lights into the sides of the tail light lens with the front/top of them flush to the tail light lens.

Step 4: Tap the white wires from the LEDs into the ground (brown) wire and the red wires into the tail light power wire (gray/black.)

Since this is in addition to the OEM bulb, I suppose it won't trigger the blown bulb warning on the instrument panel.  Correct?

No, it shouldn't trigger the BMU.

Which company manufactures the marker light you are illustrating?  Can you please give more information such as part number as well.

Click on the word "these" in my post above.  It's hyperlinked to the best price I found on them.

PO of my bike did similar but used the blinking lights and tied them in with the brake light instead of the marker. Unfortunately they are non functional and debating replacing them. .

Ordered two of these lights from the link; a rep called a few days later and told me that I'd have to order +$100 of product for them to ship it w/o a shipping fee of $25.

Any other supplier w/these same lights you know of?

Might see if one of these lights would work. The flashing brake lights I mentioned are listed here as we'll.

The lights Duck posted have a descption of marker. You might find them at places like truck stops, harbor freight and Northern Tool.

Perhaps a better choice of light would be these:

http://www.heavydutylighting.com/product_detail.php?uuid=a7AA1F3A61 (http://www.heavydutylighting.com/product_detail.php?uuid=a7AA1F3A61)

Same as those posted originally, but 3 wire/2-circuit.

One circuit for taillight and the other for brake light.

I've been told a triangular pattern is the tits for visibility and one of these on each side of the license plate and the stock lighting would do it!

I added one of these Custom Dynamics Knight Riderz Light Bars (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TRZ74G/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002TRZ74G&linkCode=as2&tag=cinematographyco) a month ago to the K75 and I'm liking it. It flashes slowly when I depress the brakes and it's very bright for eyes directly behind me.

Back when I first got the bike I put some LED's Hyperlights (or something like that) into the rear light housing. Other riders have comments that they improve my visibility.

Couple weeks back I got around to making some updates.
As I posted earlier the PO had put some flashing LED pods in the tail light like Duck did as well as a LED Bar mounted to the tail above the brake light. The flashing pods had failed. Cycle World had exactly the same ones but between a failed set already and not really impressed with how bright they were so I tried a different route and picked up these multi function emergency jobs at Auto Zone. Very bright. They have a couple different effects. The one that I thought caught the eye was a double flash wig wag. One pair blinks twice then the other pair blinks twice.

I had planned to mount all 4 in the tail light but found there just wasn't enough room. The Tail light lens really knocks down the brightness unfortunately. I am probably going to buy some of the red tail light tape that Duck posted up top and mount the other pair under the tail light Similar to what Tim did above.

I just found them yesterday.

The company I work for builds Fire Trucks and Panel Vans and they don't have them in stock - the 2 wire ones they do, but not the 3 wire.

I will have to wait for them to get some in.

Will post pics when mounted and working.

I believe I will be replacing the whole tail/stoplight wiring connector in the tail section w/a Deutsch connector because the PO has some funky lookin' wiring in there now...

Should be just a straight wiring job (in parallel so if an incandescent bulb goes out I'll still have the LED's)

I still intend to do this - had a setback when the pair of LED's came in and got lumped w/the 2 wire ones and used - AAAARGH!

I had asked the guy who is in charge of ordering & receiving parts to let me know when the order came in, but that didn't happen.

We have a new guy hired to get our inventory under control, so I had a conversation w/him about people not looking at part #'s and using a 3 wire light when they have only been using 2 wire lights before.  He was sure that if they HAD been sent out to be used they wouldn't have been, but after investigation had in fact been used.

2 levels of don't give a crap, and a level of personal disappointment after having reached out ahead of time to avoid this kind of thing.

Re-ordered and will be in next week.
