Title: Battery or 'Nator? You be the Judge cause I'm not sure
Post by: BuckOwens on September 30, 2012, 11:43:07 AM
Hi All,

First post here, and of course why wouldn't it be the fact my wonder '91 K75S is having an issue. It just rolled over 31K, been keeping up with splines, etc...

Started to notice a few weeks ago, ABS light coming on more and more at start up, and if I re started the bike after a few minutes it would go away which made me think something was up with battery or the alternator (still the original 32 amp).

Yesterday it died on me in the driveway. Took out the battery and 2amp slow charged it and it recharged quickly, threw it back on the bike and then measured with my multimeter and at 1500 RPMs idle it looked like the alternator was pushing about 13.4v into the battery. At Approx 600-800 rpm it looked more like 11.3 to 11.6 range. I also ran the bike at 1500rpm idle with all accessories on (high beams, grip warmers on high, turn signals) and it charged again at 13.3 range or so.

I'm thinking its the battery at this point. But before I go and plunk down 160 bucks on a new battery I'd like to make sure I'm checking everything I can to confirm its that and not the 'nator

Any sage advice would be appreciated. Thanks

How old is the battery? They don't last forever.

You could have the battery load tested.

The PC 680 seems to be a decent battery for a fair price and Amazon.com has free shipping on it.
