A few weeks ago I stripped out my K1100RS clutch in order to fit a new 'o' ring and oil seal. I measured the clutch plate (which was well within spec) and didn't look much further. On assembly, I noticed that the clutch release bearing was standing well proud of the casing, and my clutch cable had been adjusted all the way in since purchasing the bike. This should have rung alarm bells!
So, a few weeks on and my clutch was slipping under heavy torque. Stripped it all down again to look more closely and found badly warped clutch cover and pressure plates. So I've replaced the whole lot as a kit. I have just begun to reassemble and have noticed that the release bearing now sits almost flush with the casing and the amount of cable/arm adjustment required is quite surprising, though well within the actual range of adjustment (yes, I will adjust it by the book later). I think I've assembled everything correctly, will the new parts really make this much difference? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Do you mean the plates were dished and only contacting at the outer edge. I had one like that myself and have heard of one other the same. Seems like it is a problem we need to be aware of.

Yes, the plates were dished quite badly. Thanks to the internet I knew what to look for. I'll test the clutch by linking the release mechanism up, fitting the drive shaft and checking for release/engagement.

I'm in the middle of my first foray into the clutch. I had high rev slip at 72K miles. I had read somewhere online about the possibility of pressure plates warping. I checked mine today when I got it off. One might suspect that this was more likely on the front pressure plate as it is a composite construction of plate and spring. My front was perfect but the rear is showing about 1mm drop towards the center (high on the outside edge). How much is acceptable ? I am looking to get parts on order and wonder if I need to order a new rear.
Also I see much discussion of marking the front and rear to maintain their orientation as they are balanced together. If I were to order just the rear, it would not be balanced with the existing front plate. What issues might this cause ?

Can't say how much is acceptable but I picked up a 70k K75 with a slipping clutch on the cheap and it worked fine after I swapped in only a clutch plate.

It's been a few months now and my memory is not what is was, but I seem to remember that the new plates had marks that had to be placed 120 degrees apart. Of course, this only helps you if your old plates have the original markings. Also, I found it impossible to get the spacing absolutely correct and research showed that this is normal. Some folks even stated that the balance marks don't matter a jot. Anyway, I set mine somewhere near with no ill effects in the form of vibration.

Clutch started to slip. I pulled it and both pressure plates are dished, up to 0.75mm in the inside. (Pic Below). Clutch plate has worn to match. Replacements on everything inbound from Moto-Bins.
In terms of aligning the rear pressure plate and clutch housing; They both have balancing drill holes. This leads me to assume they are balanced separately.
