More often than not when I am out in the country and can get by safely with rolling about 2-3 mph at a stop sign I will just pop it into 2nd. You can tell when the transition is smooth that all is happy with your brick.
I use 1st gear only when I am at a dead stop.
1990 K75S and lovin it.
