Title: How Much Freeplay is Acceptable
Post by: ttown95LT on September 08, 2012, 08:10:03 PM
I have been noticing a clunking sound in the drivetrain lately, only after shutdown and backing it into the garage, bike in gear and clutch actuated.  So today I had it up on the center stand and with it in 1st gear I can move the wheel approx. 2 inches of total freeplay.  Is this acceptable?  The bike is coming up on the 50k mark.

Here (http://k100rt.aforumfree.com/t776-how-much-backlashlash-does-your-k100-have-at-rear-wheel) is what others have measured.

Thanks Inge. That's what I figured, I've got a couple of weeks off soon and will be tearing into the drivetrain, to perform Dr. Ducks splinetology. The previous owner made no mention of having done it, and I went to the shop where he had his last service done and asked them if they normally perform spline lube at any service intervals and they said that was considered an extra service that had to be requested, so that means mine has probably never been lubed since the factory.

The referenced thread has one real data point (6cm) and one that sounds to me from context like a WAG (12cm).
Maybe we motobrickers could get a better response rate? I'll measure mine tonight and report back. I'm interested.

1st gear on center stand.  28k on one, 120k on the other.

i think it's normal--basically the stackup of all the backlash in all the gears--final drive, ring and pinion plus transmission 1st gear inputshaft / layshaft / output shaft.

There's some freeplay in the transmission. Nothing to worry about.
