Title: What's the roughest road you've ever riden your K on?
Post by: tsbt on August 24, 2012, 09:46:41 AM: Last weekend I'd braved a twistie, turny, soft gravel road that led to a single lane dirt path with pot holes to a cabin by a lake. I made it out alive but the back tire was squirly as all heck. This weekend I'm slabbing it north on the 400 to Muskoka then 7km on a County maintained dirt road, to the final 1k of rough unmaintained potholled private road, for some fishing. If it's too rough I plan on parking it at the main road and hiking in on foot. This got me thinking how many others are brave enough to ride their K through rough unmaintained paths of the neverworld where only dirtbikes brave, and whether I'm the only crazy one :popcorm

This WAS where the center stand and side stand mounted.

Was doing fine two up with my daughter on the back, almost back to Bodie after a couple of hours of 4X4 trail when I came off a rock ridge wrong. Lucky it did not split the trans case and we were able to ride home still.

A good stretch of that road.

Post by: wmax351 on August 24, 2012, 12:36:14 PM: I've done some jeep trails. As well as sand jeep trails off of HWY 120 Southeast of Mono lake. It handles it pretty well.

This particular road probably wasn't used for at least 10 years judging by the rickety wooden bridge we crossed just before being stopping here to turn around. Street tires don't to well in the mud :dunno2:

Duck I'm trying to understand where your centerstand would go if you parked it. Looks soft. It's almost borderline 'lean it up against a tree' material, however the trees aren't exactly robust in that area.

Okay Taos, tell me you have a comfy seat. My Corbin would last a season if I rode in and out of that every day.

Side stand on a piece of wood I found.

In hindsight it was dumb to take my bike down that trail - but I did make it out and caught nice big rainbow trout.

About a mile and a quarter, and then we have three miles of somewhat better pit-run county road before you get to the blessed pavement of US Hwy 64. Actually, it's ok on the comparatively light and nimble K75. My /5's handle it like the little mountain goats they are, but I gotta say, it's nice having the F650 for this and all the other goat paths on the Mesa that are super fun to explore!

But all bets are off if there's been any rain. The only one that might make it would be the F, and then you'd have to take the front fender off and go balls-out to keep th' mudd flingin' outta the lugs. Dunno if I have that kinda balls.

Actually, the cover on mine is developing small rips and cracks. Anyone know a good way to repair it? Or, will Corbin re-upholster them for you? The seat being as hard as it is, it will beat up yer butt, 'specially for the passenger. Brenda HATES riding two-up on the driveway run with the K75.

Just got back from a bit of an a** killer, I'm thinking there's no hope for a reupholster on my Corbin, it's shot. I've heard Corbin offers reupholstering Taos. However I might need a more substantial seat next because my legs got numb from 7kms of rough road and slabbing for 4hrs. Maybe a custom jobbie. I love the look of my corbin but it was like riding on lumber. Then again a reapolsterd or new Corbin might be alright. I'm just sore about it. :yes

Post by: frankenduck on August 27, 2012, 03:34:55 PM: FYI: Corbin has a reputation for abysmal customer service. (Not to mention customs duties since you're from the GWN.)

Recommendation: Get an old stock seat (the seat pans weigh a lot less than those fiberglass Corbin ones) and find somebody local with a good reputation to build you a custom seat. Check local Internet MC sites to see what's available.

Post by: TaosBrick on August 27, 2012, 07:39:33 PM: I think the thing with a Corbin is that it fits your butt or it doesn't. I'm lucky, I can ride on mine for twelve hours and get off and it's like I rode around the block. Maybe i can find a local shop to re-do mine :hmm:.
