Title: Funny noise

My bike has a knocking noise coming from the right rear of the engine when I first start to open the throttle. Any ideas?

may pay to check the rubber cush drive aka monkey nutz on the alternator drive.

There are three pairs of rubber bushings in the alternator drive "cup."  Part number 8 in the diagram below.  Part number 12311464877 for a 95 50A alternator - get three of them.

Thanks Guys,

I just replaced the battery. To bad I did not get to this while the battery was out. The noise is not to bad yet. When I rip into the bike to fix this,
is there anything else that you recommend to be fixed/ upgraded/ maintained at the same time?

Another good question for me to ask is this, What spare parts do you guys suggest to carry on the bike?  I know about the clutch cable and I still have to pick one up. Can you get it cheaper aftermarket or do I have to buy from the dealer?

Nope. On a 95 everything should be fine.

I carry used backup clutch and throttle cables on all of my bikes.  When I go touring I also take a tire plug tool and some Safety Seal sticky strings and a small Airman Tour compressor. A few spare fuses in a film container too. I also have a spare H4 headlight in all of my bikes.  Since blowing a radiator hose in April I now also carry some Rescue Tape for repairing radiator hoses.

Or you could be like Shoganai and take a whole flippin' garage with you.

I just replaced my throttle and clutch cables, so the plan is to get some spares in a year or so.

I do carry spares of all bulbs, all fuses, an oil filler cap, rescue tape, spark plugs, an annoyingly loud 12v tire pump, air gauge, ear plugs and tire plugs. The tray under the seat is absolutely filled with wrenches and sockets.

+1 indispensable but ridiculously loud

Depending on how often you ride it, you might check the brushes in the Alternator. When I got my '95, it had sat for quite a while and the copper slip-rings where the brushes ride/touch was tarnished to the point that it wouldn't charge well if at all.

I guess that comes down to your personal comfort level of roadside repairs, and how much you want to pack/carry. For me I probably carry too much, which makes it a challenge for packing and weight distribution. When I'm packed for interstate cross country travel I have the tail bung and the entire right side saddle bag filled with spare parts/tools/supplies and a first aid kit. I suppose if I put it all on a scale it's near 30Lbs or so. In my right side case I carry all of my wet/cold weather gear and the cover for the bike.
So far I have been able to help other brickers more with what I have packed than what I have needed myself. I'm ok with that.
