Literally no more than 5minutes, and it burns oil. Starts up clean and smoke free after forever on center stand though.
Valve guide oil seals maybe?
-
Nothing to worry about. Early K bikes' piston rings let some oil seep into the combustion chamber. BMW changed the rings in June of 88.
How to minimize it:
1) Use the center stand.
2) Turn the bike off and tilt it to the right for about 10 seconds to let the oil drain back into the sump.

Thanks Duck.
I would've believed that leaving it on side stand overnight would make it smoke, but not such a short time!

Hi, I hope I can just pick up where this thread left off more than 2 years ago. I also get the smoke problem that seems to be connected with the way the bike is parked. When the motor is hot, I can leave the bike on the sidestand for 5 minutes and then it smokes like hell on restarting. Trouble is, parking it on the centre stand can be painful. As for tilting it the other way, I'd never get it back up again! What I don't understand is, I've never had to add any oil. Although, when I bought the bike a year ago, I immediately changed the oil with fully synthetic stuff and it was only after that I noticed the problem.

FWIW: have you ever probed a big hole in a tooth or gum and then have the dentist tell you that it was miniscule?
That's how I view smoking from a rest position on the sidestand: it's a miniscule dribble of oil into the cylinders that is being burned off in the first few minutes of operation upon starting. It seems like a big thing, but it's really almost infinitesimal.
Think of riding under those conditions as doing your small part to reduce the mosquito population....

engine = mobil 1 syn 20-50...
Mine is around 5w-40w I think, maybe that was the problem a thicker oil might not get into the combustion chamber as easily. But is 20-50 thin enough for sub zero cold starts?
