I'd like to think my 20+ year old, three thousand dollar machine is never going to be worth any thief's trouble.
Was reading http://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/t5shp/ex_thief_chopshop_operator_ama/ (http://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/t5shp/ex_thief_chopshop_operator_ama/) and it seems like new fast sport bikes and HD's top the thieving list.
Any insight?

Harleys and crotch rockets have always been prime targets around here. You would think with craigslist, Ebay and the freaky prices BMW charges someone could make a good living chopping up old beemers
-
I worry about mine being stolen.
The real question should be "What are you doing to protect your Flying Brick?"
-
Might seem silly but I bought one of these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/261045783450) on eBay for only $0.99. Only a small deterrent, but I mainly bought it to keep doofi from messing with my bike when I park it around town(lot of college students around here). Any nudges it or tries to sit on it it screeches like a banshee.

I hate the idea of cutting up my wiring harness for an alarm system. A disc lock is something that I would use. I know that there are some junk locks out there. Maybe other Brickheads can tell us what disc locks they use.

K bikes do occasionally get stolen but HDs and squid bikes are much more likely targets.
-
Wasn't any wiring necessary on that little deal I bought from ebay. I just super velcroed it onto the bike and it has a simple vibration sensor and runs off a 9v battery. Not bad for a little $1 alarm

The thing I worry about getting stolen is my helmet. I wish I had a better sense of when it's OK to leave it on the footpeg and when I really need to lug it around while off the bike.
-
A helmet is a very easy thing to lock to the bike. Put your mind at ease. :yes
-
AFAIK, they aren't. Not enough demand for parts or hot bikes.

I know of someone who had theirs stolen off the streets of SF a year or two ago.
-
I am not suprised about that. It is SF.
I do stress about mine being stolen, but vandalism is a much bigger concern.
I caught some guys climbing on my neighbor's car to get a ball out of a tree. Left lots of small dents on the roof.
The punks did not seem to be bothered with the damage they caused. Some people just don't think.
We have bike parking all the way across the apartment complex where I can't keep track of my bike.
Not sure how I am going to solve my dilemma.

A cover and insurance does well too.
B/C Progressive includes accessory coverage for comprehensive/collision insurance, my bike is far more valuable than Blue Book. With a 1k deductible, not too expensive.
2500-3000 for the bike, 700+ for the bags, 500 for the alternator, 900 for the bruno's modified driveshaft/FD.
-
A thousand dollars for a deductible? That's absurd! Talk to your agent to have that changed. It should not cost you very much more per year to have a lower deductible. I was told $250 on mine and I think that is crazy too.

I've got an ONGUARD disc lock. I picked up mine for $35. I don't know how effective it would be if "professional" decided to cut it, but I figured it would be a deterrent from anyone walking by.
I'm also thinking about getting a cheap chain to run through the rear wheel and my helmet so I don't have to carry it around. Plus it just adds extra deterrent.
-
I plan to pick up a disc lock. Two really. I just have to find someone that can set them up to use the same key. My problem is that I do not know what brands are any good and which one to stay away from.
If I was you, I do not think that I would use a chain, a good quality cable should do the trick.

If somebody really wants to steal your bike then all they need is a few people to pick it up and load it into a van or pickup.

Or just drag it into the back of a van. They have no real incentive to be gentle.

I did some checking when I chose it. I used to have just comprehensive (Theft, Parking lot, Animal Strike, etc) with a $500 deductible, but switched to 1000 deductible for both Comp and Collision (with uninsured/hit and run deductible waiver) for about the same price. Have the same coverage on the airhead, but with 8500 agreed value.
