Title: What is the procedure for mc trouble on 4-5 lane interstate?
Post by: plumberdude on July 28, 2012, 12:58:08 PM
Besides avoiding interstates. I was riding home through Seattle on I-5 and had this thought about what would I do if I had an issue with the bike. If the engine quits and you are on an inside lane, how would you get to the shoulder?

WALK !

K bikes are too heavy too PUSH LOL

I ran out of petrol one time on busy Interstate in the 4th lane, scary. Thank the BMW God's, I was able to reach the shoulder unscathed coasting. Never press the limits of fuel range was the lesson learned.

If all you gotts is a fuel idiot light, start lookin' for fuel right away when it turns on. (though you prolly have about fitty miles or more, if i remember correctly.)

200 mile range till fuel starvation occurs on my whip, minus headwind or wicKing it.

red light for petrol is around 170 miles give or take.

Coast.

You should be in the left or car pool lane on I-5.  I'd pull off to the left.

The car pool lane didn't indicate ok for mc 1 up, but did say ok for 2 or more but that's were I drove most of the time. At times I was in the inside lanes but was wondering what I would do. I think from now on I will just avoid the interstates.

Last winter I bent my fule sender rod so it reads much more accurate now, still does not quite read full when full, but is closer, so I use the trip meter to measure gas, 160 mile, I start looking, but I am a fill at half tank guy.

Many car pool lane signs say "MOTORCYCLES OK" underneath them.  It is federal law that MCs can use car pool lanes so you may do so in any state, 1-up or 2-up.

Unless I need to be in the center lanes I stay away from them. I take the far right or left lanes so I can dive for the breakdown lanes if needed.
And I have too. I-40/240 in Memphis TN. can be a death trap riding in the center lanes.
Also if I do have a bike problem I can get clear faster of moving traffic.
But that is just my way of doing it.

Park bike on the center stand in the middle of the road and walk 150 yars back up the road then pretend to step out in front of some idiot and cause a massive pile up then walk calmly back and push the bike to the shoulder and call the auto club for assistance.  See it's easy  :hehehe
