Reassembling the bike I see two different parts/names cross referenced, i put the stop disc on, clutch housing, o-ring...then i see the term Thrust Washer, am i missing something? :hmm: are these two parts different?
-
The more I dig the more I realize it's actually one and the same. :dunno
-
1 - clutch basket
2 - O-ring
3 - thrust washer
4 - clutch nut

Think I got confused by the repair manual, shows the order as pre-clutch housing. Makes sense now. Thanks :bmwsmile

To make the confusion complete, third version..........
1. trust washer/stop disc.
2. clutch housing.
3. O-ring.
4. compression ring/shouldered spacer.
5. clutch nut.

I guess there is a ring in there. Never gone that far myself.

You can even choose........1,0 mm or 1,25 mm......have never understood why.

That way you can move the clutch basket out that extra .25mm after you install your seal .5mm out from the engine surface.................. :loopy:
-
I was told that is because of a batch of flywheels that had slightly different shoulders machined on them and would rip up the web on the main seal without the thicker thrust washer - no way to tell which ones are effected.
When I pulled mine apart last year and found it completely lacking a thrust washer I just put a 1mm in and hoped - its been alright for 6K so far.

?????? A thicker thrust washer would move the flywheel shoulder closer to the seal, or..................????????
About hearsay...did read...was told...I have from somewhere way back, no idea where.......
That the reason to have the seal protruding 0,5mm came with the first generation teflon seal which had a rather big lip,
and if this seal was fitted 0,5mm below the surface as earlier it was on the inside of the shoulder........
and then soon after moved 1,0mm out................................

That was the story from the parts guy at the local dealership who was around when bmw were interested in supporting bricks in the uk. My memory of the flywheel is fuzzy anyway. I was more concerned with just putting one back in there. it seemed to make sense at the time as the main seal on mine was wrecked and it had no thrust washer in there at all from the last police clutch change at 20k
Sent from my BlackBerry using Tapatalk so excuse the spelling!

And BOY was that 0,5mm a real trick to establish. Tricky tricksters, those BMW people. :hmm:

I`m quite surprised, even with your brand new R.K. rear installer tool.......which should "work like gangbusters"?

After the removal and distruction of two of those seals I would never go back to a 2x4 and cursing thanks to Rod, but the last hundred yards are always the toughest when you're obsessed with perfection, Inge.
