Post by: branandfox on June 19, 2012, 01:45:57 AM
are the K1100 Brakes bolt and go or not?
If so what do I need to do to change brakes.

The best way is to change the complete front end from triple clamps down. Just putting the K1100 brakes on can be done but is not a simple conversion, parts need to be made to bolt calipers and wheel spacers and front fender mounts etc.
I looked into it some time ago and decided it was not worth the trouble.

I have a K1100 front end on my K75 and the braking is much better. If you swap in a complete K1100 front end:

a) You also end up with beefier forks that have progressively wound springs.

b) The K1100 steering stem is a narrower diameter so you lose the steering damper in the steering head - but all that does is make the bike a little wobbly at VERY low speeds.  Aside from that everything seems to work fine.

But it takes quite a lot of parts including the forks, wheel, axle, rotors, fork brace, brake lines, calipers, master cylinder and fork trees.

Not very much.  I scored a nice set of forks for $10.49 plus shipping on Fleabay because there was only one other bidder and the seller had started the bidding at $9.99.  The rest of it was parts I had laying around from bikes I've parted.  The most expensive part was $150ish for braided stainless brake lines from Galfer.

It was worth it ro me since I had all of the stuff on hand pretty much and really wanted a K75 with good front brakes but if you tried to do it piecemeal then you'd be much better off time-. money-. and effort-wise just selling your current bike and buying a K100RS4V, K1100RS or K1100LT.  And along with the better brakes you'd get better suspension and 10 more HP, not to mention much better handling on radial tires.
