Title: drip,drip.....
Post by: jeffhestand on June 12, 2012, 08:35:08 AM
I am at my wits end trying to get my final drive to stop leaking. I changed the lube to full syn and think that might have contributed to the problem. I have got a new nut and a new 14 mm aluminum crush washer and it still drips. Is there a seal back there that could be causing the problem and i just think its the nut??? HELP!!!

I don't know where you're seeing the leaked lube, but there is a large seal "behind" the brake rotor.  It is not too expensive (under $30 if memory serves) and you can replace it yourself.  There are instructions on how to do it here and on the ibmwr.org site (http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/final-drive-seal.shtml (http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/final-drive-seal.shtml)).

Make sure it is this seal before replacing it.  They don't go bad often but they do sometimes.

Motodude is spot on about the big seal but before just replacing it be sure the bearing isnt worn and loose. It doesn't happen often but checking it will save having to do it all over again and it is easy to just give the disc a wriggle to feel and play.

thanks. I still have yet to finally determine ( by watching) where it is leaking. I just cant imagine with a new drain plug and a new alum crush washer that it would continue to leak there. I guess with 68K the seal could be leaking. Ugh.... thanks

I would almost guarantee, it is not the drain plug (w/ new crush washer).  Feel "back" between the final drive and the rotor and see if any lube is back there.  That would be a decent indication that it is the seal.

I've been dealing with the same issue for a while. Just kept an eye on the oil level and added small amounts about every 2 weeks. Now it seems to have stopped leaking. Could it have been overfilled?

i am kind of wondering if was overfilled myself. Did not have a leak until i changed fluid. I have determined it was the seal as it is leaking down on the inside of the disk. I have heard the seal is not too high at the dealer?

Here's an account of my experience with the job:

It's not hard! Take your time, study the pdf how-to linked to in that thread, and ask questions here if you get stumped.
