Title: Which sparkplugs to use On my K100RS.
Post by: brandandfox on May 29, 2012, 04:07:42 AM
85 K100RS Needing spark plugs and wires! She was a barn sitter for some years and Im trying to get her back into peak condition. Only 32,000 Miles! So far I have found the Basic NGK Sparkplugs that most use and then these:

http://www.amazon.com/PERFORMANCE-SPARK-PLUG-BMW-K100-188yBR12ZC188yz/dp/B004TYUG4I/ref=sr_1_7?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1337830342&sr=1-7 (http://www.amazon.com/PERFORMANCE-SPARK-PLUG-BMW-K100-188yBR12ZC188yz/dp/B004TYUG4I/ref=sr_1_7?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1337830342&sr=1-7)

Any feedback on anything other than the NGK? Something with a little more performance?
Sending in the injectors for cleaning soon and replacing all the rubber on the bike aswell as alot of plastics. Recently put in a foam performance filter for starters and the pichler fairing is coming aswell.
Any good Upgrade Ideas to a 85 K100RS welcome.

Since it`s Brisk spark plugs in your link.........have a look at this (http://www.geezer site.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10543).

As you`re planning to change the genuine wires (and caps) which have built in resistors,
you must use spark plugs with resistors (as used on the K 11`s ).

So if I used the brisk sparkplugs and the K100 wires would I be good to go? New to DIY. In the diagram they say they have resistance but I'm not exactly sure of the difference in the NGKS and the brisk plugs aside from the 360Degree firing .

If you gonna use the genuine plug cap/wires, you must search a corresponding spark plug without a resistor.
Must manufactors just add a R in the code for the resistance plugs.

So if my sparkplugs have resistance the wires should not? and vice versa?

Correct.................around 6K ohms on the genuine caps/wires..if I remember right.

So if buying the brisk plugs I should buy the K1100 Wires and caps or new K100s? The brisks seem to be resistance plugs from the diagram But in the specifications it doesn't infer that it is.

Ordinary Brisk spark plugs without resistor for K100`s = B14C.

BTW. I`ve used NGK D7EA for the last 26 years....did reach back home...everytime...don`t experiment that much.

The number defines the heat range - lower is a hotter plug and higher is colder.

Not always the case - varies by manufacturer.

Yeah, I was specifically referring to the NGK ratings quoted, but failed to mention that detail explicitly

Excuse my impertinence, but inquiring minds want to know. What performance gains to you expect to realize by spending roughly $80 on spark plugs?  :hmm:

I've been looking around and found that the D8EA conversion to the BRISK LGS is the BOR12LGS.
Better spark and all around better starting and idle from all accounts and better MPG. anyone know Which wires I need to run for these? K100 wires or something else?

Hopefully just a little better MPG and smoother Idle is what im looking for, something a little more modern into the old girl. Maybe a quicker start-up as-well, she doesn't like to start up sometimes.

Have you tested the coils?

not yet but ill get to those soon too. trying to test and if needed replace most electrical pieces of the bike. starting with these sparkplugs, as they are the originals Lol, 1985 barn sitter for 20 or so years.

I doubt any will be noticed. The K bikes are not high performance to start with. Just get the normal plugs, or possibly iridium ones for longer life.

Same thing with the performance filter. There is literally no gain from using an aftermarket filter, but they cost more, need cleaned more often, and let more dirt through. A stock K air filter is totally over-engineered, and is good for ~50k miles.
