...what are one's next best choices for fuel? Expecting Dr. D to chime in here.

Texaco is now owned by Chevron and they add Techron as well.

Or just pack a bottle of Techron additive and add your own.

you can be on the lookout for the 2 for 1 deal on 20oz techron at your local autoparts store...

what i do is add 1/2 bottle to full tank... then add the rest to the next tank... do that for 4 consecutive tanks...

generally do that twice a year...

I usually like shell. Pumps are faster, for whatever reason. Be careful when filling.

If I can't get Chevron or T-rex-ico, I usually opt for Shell.  I'll also add the occasional dose of Berrymans or Seafoam at very random intervals.

Around here I use Speedway, BP. UDF, Marathon, Clark, Swifty, Kroger, Sunoco, Sam's Club, Pilot, Meijer, Valero, Gas America, there's probably others out there. Never tried Shell, just seems like a funny name for a gas company :neener:

Chevron,Texaco petrol is NOT available here in the Mid Atlantic period.

It may be a mind set but none of my bikes like too digest Sunoco brand period. Hell, the mid grade Sunoco tends to burn better than the 93 rated octane.   :dunno2:

Shell is what I try to purchase if possible, followed by Exxon or Gulf.

Can any of you chemistry bricKheads please explain how adding nitrogen cleans the injectors ?

Overall condition of gasoline storage is another tidbit. Older stations tend to have water intrusion and lack state of the art filtering.

dunno, I've done the Chevron FI concentrate drill a few times on my whip. Cutter claims it's the ONLY snake oil that actually works.

Startron brand alcohol enzyme magiK seems to help slightly with the alcohol blobs that collect on the bottom of the tank.

http://mystarbrite.com/startron/ (http://mystarbrite.com/startron/)

My mantra: fill up with premium, flog the bitch hard till the fuel light turns on, refill.  Large percentage of fuel related problems are from letting a bricK sit too long un-ridden.

Interesting info about the Shell logo in the pic below.

DRxBMW,
Don't know about cleaning injectors, but nitrogen in the tires sure makes them faster.  :bmwsmile

If you have a refinery nearby or big gasoline distributor, you will probably see all major and minor brands pulling gas from the same tanks. It's supposedly the magic additives make the difference.

Gasoline, like motor oil, gens lots of ambiguous discussion.

Slightly off-topic but I'll throw in my $0.02 here.
I've just spent a total of 8 hours at my local wrench trying to diagnose a "random mis-fire" in my 2005 5cyl Chevy Colorado 4x4.
We scanned for codes, got only one, did a "smoke test" for vacuum leaks, and finally a leak down test on the cylinder with the lowest reading (180 vs 190) to find I have very positive crankcase ventilation  :eek2:
The Big Giant Brains (myself included) decided that my #1 cylinder was egg-shaped or all the piston rings had lined up - either scenario was not very palatable and the cure was NOT going to be cheap.
As luck would have it, a former co-worker drove in for a visit with the wrench (we all worked at a Ford dealer together a few years back). He had the same vehicle as I, with the same motor, and experienced a catastrophic motor failure at 7K miles that was being handled by Chevrolet warranty.
He was visiting with the technician that was swapping out his motor and while there took a peek at the internals of his, now dead, unit. What he saw was that his piston rings had become stuck inside the grooves of the #1 piston (unrelated to the motor failure) due to some "unknown gummy ch1t" in the grooves.
The Chevrolet tech related that he sees this condition a lot when folks continually run "cheap gas" from 2nd tier retailers in newer vehicles. The suppliers to these 2nd tier retailers usually put some sort of additive in the fuel before it leaves the distributor for the specific purpose of making the fuel palatable to much older vehicles.
My former co-worker was just as guilty as I was of buying the cheapest gas possible for our trucks. I have been buying from the local Thrifty Gas (an ARCO/BP subordinate) station since I landed back in SoCA last October.
At $4.25/per it was keeping me from going broke as I commuted 80 miles RT to my temp job. It was also, apparently, gluing the rings to the insides of the grooves in my pistons - with the #1 hole being the worst offender of the 5.
Prevailing wisdom now told us that I recently bought a tank of ch1tty fuel and that $200+/- of Chevron Mid-Grade with Techron and a couple bottles of Lucas Fuel System Conditioner "should" eventually clear the misfires and codes from my 96,000 mile motor.
Time will tell.......... :dunno2:

Moral of the story: run anything that you want/like in your moto - just know that if you buy from cheaper "off-brand" stations you will eventually pay the price (pardon the pun).
Run a tank, or two, of 1st tier premium every now and then and/or head to Pep Boys and pick up a bottle of Techron additive and do what J O does as preventive maintenance.

YMMV

Here in Oklahoma Conoco rules, cause they are one of the few that still sell 100% Ethanol free fuel.  I have found the brick loves this fuel as well as the weed wacker and chainsaw, and oh I might as well include the lawnmower.

I am finding that pretty much all the Chevron in NM has 10% ethanol, regardless of grade :/
BUT - the Phillips station on the south end of town has 90 with ZERO ethanol! Put some in the R75/5 the other day, seems a bit more peppy. Will try in some in Chili Red soon...

When did they change the way octane is figured?

octane is figured in the usa by the ( r + m ) / 2 method...

As far as knockin' and pingin' go, no worries up here at 7,000' no matter WHAT you put in th' beest, octane-wise. But in the manual for my '92 K75, it suggests 91. 90 no-corn makes all my whips run wicked strong. Been considering going out to the airport for some o that no-corn100LL. That should wake 'em all up REAL good  :2thumbup:

Like I wrote before, manual states 89 octane for my 1995 K75, BUT the tag under the seat says "91 octane".
Why the difference? Looks like "91" fuel for this brick.
Title: Re: So, if you can't get Chevron...
Post by: TimTyler on July 20, 2012, 01:41:43 PM
Perhaps the decal is based on German ratings and the owner's manual is US?

In Germany, a 91 RON octane is considered "standard", probably the lowest grade available at the pump.

In the US, (as mentioned earlier in this thread) octane is MON + RON / 2.

If your basic US gas has a MON=87, then rated in association with standard 91 RON yields a 89 octane (M+R/2) at US pumps.

So German 91 = US 89. Super-fun chart at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating#Examples_of_octane_ratings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating#Examples_of_octane_ratings)

So consensus is, no performance/mileage or engine longevity benefit to using medium or high grade fuel? 87 octane (here in North America) is the best?
I have tried 89 with no apparent difference. Any feedback on 91? My brick runs and idles fine, but wouldn't it be nice to increase fuel mileage?

In Australia we use the RON system and I always run my K1100 and especially the K75 on the highest grade I can get which near home is 98.
I dont want any detonation and considering the compression ratio of 11-1 the lower grades will give some.  The best reason of all is the Nicasil bores and detonation do not coexist happily one little bit. In my opinion consistent use of low grade fuel is the main reason that the nicasil bores fail and I have been fixing and building engines for a long time.

Better mileage, less pinging under full wicK factor using premium.

My whip likes Shell brand 93 petrol. Sunoco for some unknown reason burns funky.

Course, where you actually buy the gas is another story. Newer stations/pumps tend to have a better filtering systems.

If all else fails, buy a bottle of Chevron tech cleaner concentrate for occasional dosing.

Part of the problem is the 10% alcohol, read less bang for the buck.  :hmm:

Any of you brickers happen to know what Nitrogen does for for cleaning purposes ?  Shell markets that fact BIG time, clueless about the actual chemistry.

Well, you are a wrench, so I will start using "high test" and leave it at that. My original reason for asking, was that there seems to be a bit of confusion between Boxers and bricks in the real world. All my boxer friends tell me that they were built to travel the globe, and hence, needed to be designed to handle the worst and best fuels out there. It begs the question, it that a myth?  or a "tweek" by BMW for dual sport or "adventure" models only? or is that also a myth. I have rebuilt a few bikes, but they were simple HD and vintage Triumph engines, so in IMHO I am a Luddite compared to real mechanics. The "simple" regular task of cleaning or replacing an air filter on my K is mysterious and puzzling to me...even with the factory manual, so rebuilding the engine is not high on my bucket list.

I won't buy high octane gas for the bike from a station that has one hose on a pump offering multiple fuel grades.

I figure there's probably at least two or three gallons of whatever fuel the last guy bought pre-loaded in the hose and pump plumbing, and I'd likely be wasting my money.

:yow Us poor country bumpkins only get REG PREM ULTRA or DIESEL...luckily my wife's' car, and my truck both take (the manufacturers recommended) 87 regular fuel.

Maybe I could sneek another feulish question in here without raising the ire of the moderators? What about injector cleaner? Anyone use it, or is it already added to higher grade fuels? The reason I ask, is that I recently experienced of of motorcycling's most embarrassing moments...I always add stabilizer to a fresh tank before I garage the K for about 3 or 4 months (depending on the weather gods here in Canada) and upon re-emerging this spring, I noticed it was sputtering and coughing a bit at low RPM, so although I had never experienced this in previous years,  I figured, hey, maybe the stab or gas was bad, and gummed the injectors, so I put the required amount per volume in a fresh tank, to no avail...and it was then that my friend noticed the rubber vacuum cap missing on the middle carb  :embarass: I replaced it, and all was good again. Well there is still a bit of injector cleaner left in the tank, as I have not had the opportunity to top it up with a fresh tank...of what will NOW be hi-test. Will there be an issue with that combo?

Here's a site that lists ethanol-free gas stations: http://pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=WA (http://pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=WA)

FYI, I just checked the pure-gas.org site and found that there are only 5 locations in the peoples republic of California that sell real gas.
Everyone of them is far north of the Bay Area. What is a Brickhead to do?

I won't buy high octane gas for the bike from a station that has one hose on a pump offering multiple fuel grades.

I figure there's probably at least two or three gallons of whatever fuel the last guy bought pre-loaded in the hose and pump plumbing, and I'd likely be wasting my money.

Ya, I hear you.

Petrol arrives into Billtown via pipeline. Just imagine what the buffer mix is ? LOL

However, I'm willing to spend one dollar "more or less" per tanKup, read good karma. Pass it to the next poor soul who buys 87 is my mantra. I knew a guy who owned a Porsche and ran low octane fuel. Talk about uphill ping, sigh, if they ONLY knew.
