Title: Clock repair?

About the only thing not working on my 1984 K100Rs is the clock. I'm hoping that I just need to reflow the solder joints and it will blink back into life.

While I have the clock apart, the red warning acetate appears to be melted, is there an easy fix to spruce it up?

Is there anything else I should be "maintaining" in the instrument panel, or just clean and lube the contacts with dialectic grease?

Any suggestion for mods or upgrades? The cluster is plenty bright, so I don't think I need to LEDify it.

Its pretty much just that. Reflow the solder joints, scotchbrite the contact pads on the LCD, and reflow the solder tracks that the LCD contacts connect to.

While you are in there, you can convert the clock to 12 hour (US) time, calibrate the speedometer, change the back-lighting color (I converted mine to red (incandescent) bulbs. Looks really nice.

I'm quite happy with a 24 hour clock, I just hope it can be coaxed back into life.

I just hope I don't fark up anything else when I've got it in pieces.

I pulled the meter apart yesterday but failed to fix the clock. At some time there has been a lot of heat in there and some of the plastic parts have melted!

I reassembled it and just stuck a battery powered clock on the top!

Hi all,

The speedo on my 84 k100 has been playing up for ages. I was pretty well convinced that it was the unit itself in the instrument cluster. Why? Because one day when it suddenly cut out I gave a gentle knock on the glass and it sprang back into life. But now it hurts my knuckles and has become more and more difficult to wake up. So I managed to get a whole instrument unit for 50 €. I plugged it in and switched everything on, and everthing worked except the clock. The LCD was visible but not as clear as the original, and it quickly almost faded right out. I put my old unit back and the clock was still fine, so it's not like I damaged any wires when I swapped the units. Any advice on how to fix this?

Remove the rear cover of the instruments, high up on the rearside of the speedo you find a three pin
connector (well known problem source, BMW have used several metods to solve this over the years).
Remove the center part with all contact pins and bulbs....then clean the three contact pins, and add a piece
rubber foam between the three pin connector and the rear instrument cover...to add pressure to the contacts.

Same as above....bad connection. While you have things apart you can clean the two connectors to the clock
or you can swap the clock as one unit.

After this you should have two complete instruments, both with a functioning speedo and clock.

Thanks, I already took both units apart and swapped the clocks. When I plugged them in again both clocks worked! I'll try out the advice on the speedo. As you seem to know so much about this unit, maybe you know if there is a solution for the gear number indicator? It works, but the numbers have become unreadable.

Is the numbers in the display very weak? Do you have a "normal" (not weak) neutral light?
Can you start in neutral without pulling the clutch?......if yes to all questions, the problem is
internal in the GPI PCB.

I can say no to all those questions. Here's a picture. Strange, it looks like it's plugged in but it's off the bike. The other (working) unit shows no display at all when not connected.

The LCD unit can likely be replaced on its own. A bit of looking on Mouser could find a replacement. Or ebay for a new GPI Board.

http://www.paspeedo.com/ (http://www.paspeedo.com/) has full clock modules (LCD, circuit board and plastic housing complete and assembled) and the LCD for the GPI, but no circuit board. $68 and $39 before shipping respectively. After 4 years I figure I can spring for the new GPI LCD and see what it's like to always know what gear I'm in  :hehehe
