Title: Hello from Sonoma County California
Post by: BillyMac on April 18, 2012, 07:18:59 PM
Hello everyone, I'm a new K-Bike owner, and a new motorcycle owner altogether. I've only been riding for less than a year and previously had a 1967 Yamaha Bonanza 180. It was fun to learn on, but topped out around 35MPH and wouldn't even get me to work. So, I sold it and went looking around for something safe and reliable, and I believe I found it in my 1990 K75. I bought a used one for $1800 and it came with a thorough inspection list of items that needed to be fixed... and ~115k on the ticker. It ran reliably but it needed some work. The miles were previously wracked up by a long daily commuter going up and down the freeway from the North Bay area down into San Rafael.

I want to learn to do a lot of the maintenance and fixes myself, and I've been going over these forums like crazy since I bought it. But I left these initial big fixes to a professional so it would be up to speed and then I would maintain it from there. The big fixes were: replaced clutch disk, full spline lube, replace drive shaft(was found to be shot when it was opened up), and a bunch of gaskets and seals replaced throughout. I'm not much of a gear head and have only done small repairs on my previous Jeep Wrangler, but I picked up a Clymers manual and have been searching all over these forums.

Just wanted to say hello, and thank you for all the outstanding knowledge and experience shared here.

Took it out for my first "longer" ride today other than just running errands, and did a little bit of a ride report. It was short, so I figured I would just include it here.

Welcome BillyMac, That's a nice lookin' 75 there. Clutch, final, and drive shaft. All you could have problems with are pretty minor now! Change the brake fluid, anti-freeze and fork oil if you don't know when they've been done. Happy bricking!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I look forward to really customizing this bike and getting lots of tips here. I really liked the work frankenduck posted in the "Building the K75F" thread, and I think I might steal that Line-X idea  It looks great and my Radiator Surround and Engine Spoiler are really nicked up(the engine spoiler color doesn't match 100% either). I was going to post a thread in The Workshop about what I should do to fix the cylinder head.

Here's another option for the LineX belly pan:

I really liked the full pan and surround look you had on yours. Mainly because my pain doesn't match the 654 red. Also the bags, as mine are a bit scuffed up. If you don't mind me asking, about how much did it run you? I requested a quote online from my local Line-X shop and they were less than helpful. I'll probably have to stop in and show them the actual parts to get sprayed.

If memory serves both were $50.  The "racing stripe" version took less material but more labor which is why they were the same.  They also just quote off the tops of their heads and $50 is a nice round number.

Yes, best to take it in in person.

Hi BillyMac,

Welcome aboard.
If you get into Napa at some point, get in contact with me. It will be great to have another Brickhead in the area.

Hi BillyMac,

Welcome aboard.

Almost made the run over there the other day when I went to Glen Ellen, but me being such a rookie was a little wary of the twisties on the cut across from Gllen Ellen to Oakville (Trinity/Dry Creek/Oakville Rd). But Gott's Roadside is such a temptation!

I am guessing you are coast guard?

My neighbor is the Grand-daughter of Admiral Russel Waesche, who was the admiral of the coast guard during WWII. She is the ship's sponsor of USCGC Waesche. I got to go on the friends and family day on the ship.

Yep, sure am. I'm out at the Training Center in Petaluma. That's awesome, I got to take a tour of that ship a while back, very cool much more up-to-date than the 1968 commissioned ship I was on

Very nice. I used to do bicycle rides on the roads out there. Really nice area, with great roads, and not far from Pt. Reyes.

Station House Cafe is an excellent place to eat in Pt. Reyes Station.

The Waesche was incredible. Got the full tour, Engine Room, Bridge, Etc. They even landed the helicopter on the flight deck. I got to watch it from the control tower. That must take some nerves of steel to fly like that.

Ummm.. I have kind of a dumb question... I'm having quite a difficult time getting the belly pan off. The Clymer's explanation is pretty useless and not even the same type. I can see the two bolts on the rear mounting bracket, but I assume I'm not supposed to remove those just to get the belly pan off(that and I tried and those bolts will not budge). The only other option I see is to remove those two screws holding it to that mounting bracket, but there is almost zero clearance to get a screw driver in there. Am I going about this the wrong way? I assume it's going to be something super simple that I overlooked and I'm going to feel pretty dumb in the end  :embarass:

Remove the two bolts underneath the front of it and pull the whole thing forward.  #11 below

haha, I knew it was going to be something I overlooked. I didn't mess with those because I thought they were some sort of scuppers  :loopy:
