Title: Distraction Prevention
Post by: wmax351 on March 11, 2012, 08:51:53 PM
Its like a computer, without facebook (or motobrick or advrider).

1939 Remington Noiseless DeLuxe. My mom wrote her master's thesis with this. I believe it was my grandmother's before my mom's.

I also just bought a 50's Smith Corona portable on Craigslist. I had to give the old one back to my mom and sister (she's a hipster).

The build quality on these is amazing. All made in USA. 70 years old, and 55 years of use, and it still works perfectly. Just adjusted a few things on the Remington, and replaced the carriage tension string/cable (not spring).

Those older Remingtons were  certainly the pick of the bunch. Pre computer I used to type the minutes of a club and correspondence on one and it was a really good machine.
If there was a nuclear war I reckon that those Remingtons and cockroaches would be the only things left.
Well maybe a few bricks too.

Same credentials as a rotary telephone.  Those things used to last for generations before the onslaught of technology made it pointless to produce anything that lasts more than a couple of years.   :beatdeadhorse:

Same with shoes and power tools.

Love the emoticon!  I should hit the [more] button more.

Great stuff!

Where do you get replacement rubber for the platens/rollers?

For the rollers, I used some heat shrink tubing. I used thick, 3:1 shrink ratio, glue centered type, but any should do.

For the platens, heat shrink could work, or http://www.amessupply.com/ (http://www.amessupply.com/) will re-cover them.
