Title: 12-02-27 Seattle to Deception Pass, via Port Townsend
Post by: Charlesleoiv on February 27, 2012, 10:24:09 PM
Meant to go ride with a buddy yesterday, but our trip got all fouled up by snow, sleet, and hail!  Figured today would be more of the same, but there wasn't a cloud in the sky and the temperature eked its way into the 40s, so I ended up doing a loop around the north end of Puget Sound:

This trip included 2 ferry rides: one from Seattle to Bainbridge Island, and another from Port Townsend to Coupeville, Whidbey Island.  The Pt. Townsend-Coupeville route, which I'd never ridden before, was incredible; basically you're headed directly toward this the whole time:

Stopped off at Deception Pass for a moment...

...but the real impetus for the trip was the Oyster Burger at Sweet D's Shrimp Shack:  http://www.shrimpshack.us/welcome (http://www.shrimpshack.us/welcome)  (I didn't take a picture of the burger so that I'd have an excuse to ride back up there again, next sunny day.)  Headed home through La Conner before hitting the 5 back to Seattle.

Pretty much the first real trip on my K75... very excited to have this bike!

the 5 back to Seattle.

Are you from LA or something?  It's "I-5."

That's a nice ride.  Kudos to you for doing it in that (relatively) cold weather.  Better sun and chill than rain and clouds though.

Next time you do it plan an extra 30-45 minutes to visit the gun emplacements at Fort Casey.  They brought back some of the big artillery from The Phillipines at Corregidor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Corregidor) and you can see the shrapnel pock marks in the barrels of them. One of several major turning points in the battle for The Pacific and truly a piece of world history.
