Title: What’s your favorite byway?
Post by: DRxBMW on February 19, 2012, 09:40:26 AM
WHAT ARE THE BEST MOTORCYCLE ROADS? I’m sure there’s a bunch of roads you could name right now that you deem as your favorites. But did you know that there is an even bigger bunch that is officially designated as “National Scenic Byways“? And, by the way, what the heck is an officially designated “All-American Road”?

I vote for the Blue Ridge Parkway, on weekdays of course. The little unknown feeder roads are the ones to seek out with a passion.

On a global rating scale, got to be the Minami Alpine region in Japan.

Here’s the scoop:

The US Department of Transportation recognizes certain chunks of motorcycle-riding splendor for their archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and/or scenic qualities and calls them “National Scenic Byways.”

If that’s not an enticing enough list of soul-fulfilling riding destinations, they then take that list and isolate a number that are the MOST scenic and those are called “All-American Roads.” Stated differently, these are America’s “A list” motorcycle destinations for sport-touring riders. All-American Roads include destinations such as:

♦ Big Sur Coast Highway

♦ Beartooth Highway

♦ Blue Ridge Parkway

♦ San Juan Skyway

In fact, check out the whole list of America’s Byways

http://byways.org/ (http://byways.org/)

You can also request an America’s Byways Map which will be mailed to you at no charge. (Alas, it’s only for folks in North America).

I've ridden the Needles before, fantastic slice of moto tarmac.

Ha, friggin herd of bison crossed paths with the K 75 en-route. Thank the BMW God's, they all decided to keep moving across the highway while I was stopped in fear. What a trip,BIG animals, scary ch1t ___________________.

Super nice area. Usually a very good condition road. Nice undulating dips and rises and turns.

Without a doubt the best road in the US is Highway 1 from SF north to Leggett.  Just the 22 miles from the coast to Leggett puts Deals Gap to shame,  If you ride it mid-week in the off season when it hasn't rained in a while (no gravel) then it's absolute heaven on two wheels.  South of SF is Big Sur which is pretty nice and you can spot migrating whales in the spring  (between Big Sur and Ragged Point is pretty nice) but it doesn't have near the twistiness of the northern part.

Gonna ride the whole coast from Cambria to Crescent City again in April.  Can't wait..... it's what I live for.....

Agree on all points.

Also, any of the passes over the sierras are great. Sonora, Tioga. Rt 108, 120, 4, 88, etc
