Title: Starting After Maintenance
Post by: BobR on February 10, 2012, 08:41:41 PM
Trying to crank the old lady up after doing the cruise control mod and changing all my fuel hoses.  Cranked it 3-4  times for 10-15 seconds each and it is not firing yet.  Kill switch is ok and side stand up. Started on a dime before the work.  Any tricks to this, or what is the experience out there after doing this type of maintenance on the fuel hoses for a typical "cranking time"?  Don't want to keep cranking it if it should have gone by now, thus indicating a potential problem somewhere.  Thanks...

greetings bobr...

is this your 91 k100rs you are talking about... if so... should fire immediately...

1... can you hear the fuel pump whirr when you turn on the key...
2... is your headlight on when you turn on the key and hit the start button...

Probably just needs a bit of cranking to get fuel all through the system and get the pressure up.

Make sure your battery has plenty of juice.

I have no idea what you have to touch for the cruise control but in addition to J O's suggestions, you might also check the fuel pressure and look for a triggering signal at the injectors.

Double check your recent work first.

For the injector, you only really need to check one injector.  I recently built a small harness so that I could put an LED between the two leads and still have the injector fire.  I did it so I could troubleshoot an intermittent issue.  It worked well and was kinda cool watching the LED flash while the engine was running.

yes, I can hear the fuel pump whirr and the headlight is on when I turn the ignition on.  I know I have to get the hoses filled up and all, just seems to be taking a while.  My fuel tank level was towards the low end when I started the work.  Did not have the fuel light yet but I know I am close according to the mileage.  Would a low tank level make it difficult for the pump to get primed?

Did you disconnect your coil wires for you tach connection?
Fuel lines reversed?

I tapped into the rear coil, but I have verified the connector is back on correctly.  Hope I did not reverse the fuel lines.  I have the most forward connection at the tank routed to the fuel header.  The other line routes to the fuel pressure regulator.

Fuel return line should be connected to front stub at fuel tank.

That was it.  Started right up.  Lesson for me to not rely on my memory when it comes connections..  thanks again for the help.

What's a "fuel header?"  Is that like a fuel rail?  If so then you have them backwards.
