Title: Stubborn/stuck gas cap screws
Post by: frankenduck on April 24, 2025, 12:16:07 AM
I'm getting a K75 to run that's been sitting for fifteen years. As expected the gas cap screws were really frozen and simply would not turn. In the past I drilled the heads off of the screws but I don't like doing that because the screws are so tiny and it's a PITA to get them out once the heads are drilled off.

I have an impact driver but it's way too big for tiny screws so I bought a 1/4" impact driver at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BXLS2D8Z

Even with the impact driver it still took a lot of pounding to get them out but I did manage to get them all unscrewed. I used the PH1 bit since they're tiny screws. That worked om two of the screws but the other two screws were so frozen that the the impact drived stripped the Pkillips heads. Out of desperation I then tried the PH2 and pounded really, really hard on the impact driver. Much to my surprise that actually worked on the stripped heads so I was able to get the gas cap off. icon_cheers

I'll replace the gas cap screws with stainless M4x10 Allen head screws and put some anti-seize on the threads.

Nice work on the scariest job to do on a brick that I can think of.
