Title: Starter motor won't stop!
Post by: NortonDave on April 14, 2025, 01:32:21 AM
1985 K75 - Turn the key on hit the start button then starter motor just kept running even after turning the key off and kill switch? Is that the relay stuck? Had to disconnect the battery to make it stop. Seems very odd plus the engine didn't fire.

Yep sounds like the stuck relay.

Use the force and a little solid tap to free it up.

Consider installing an easily accessible battery isolation switch.

Common for K's to do that when the battery is low.  As Daveson said pretty east to unstick the relay but get a fresh or fully charged battery to keep it from happening again.

Thank you folks. So today I discovered another (second hand) relay in a box of bits that came with the bike and installed that only to find that with all this goings on my battery has run down so it did it again. So right now I'm charging my battery (lithium) and will try again. Of course I may have confused things by changing the relay. I've done that because the first time I'm confident the battery was in good shape because the starter motor cranked away solidly for several minutes while I got to and disconnected the battery. But now I've added the doubt of the second relay possibly being faulty too. If the fully charged battery doesn't t sort it I'll buy a new relay. Good idea to install a cut off switch though , thanks.
