Looks like my starter motor is beginning to crap out. The symptoms are that the starter sometimes won't fire, although the relay clicks. If I put the bike in first and roll forward a little then it works. This leads me to believe it's probably the brushes are worn and need to be replaced, and I think I've read that's fairly common.
Is there anything other than the brushes I should service while I have it apart? Are there any special tools I'll need?
I was able to get a spare starter motor for a song, but it's also used, so I'd like to get the original one serviced while I'm using the backup replacement unit.

Clean the commutator. Instructions are here (https://www.k100-forum.com/t2342-starter-motor-cleaning-tutorial). Clean all starter cable terminals and connections; clean battery terminals and connectors.

out of curiosity, as i've seen many post about refurbishing/restoring parts. Or people going trough some lengths to check stuff and go out of their way to not have to replace their relays.
What would be the price for replacing your starter over there?
Not to poke anyone's eye, BUT...
When my starter was having his moment of final goodbeyes -on my first K-, it set me back 25 to maybe 60 euros depending on state, age and km's to replace it, which was cheaper and faster than getting new brushes and or parts to restore the starter.
Ofcourse i'd have to get it in a state of usabillity.

You aren't wrong, I picked up a used one for a song. Still, I'd rather do a little wrenching to learn, and to ensure that my starter is in good shape.
