Title: heat protection for side case above exhaust
Post by: gkanai on October 02, 2024, 04:47:17 AM
On a recent long ride on the K75C (the one where my odometer broke due to old plastic gears) I did a fairly long stint at high speeds on the highway. The bike ran well overall but when I was unpacking the side case close to the exhaust, it was fairly warm to the touch. Nothing melted or anything like that but I wanted to know if anyone else has done any sort of modification to the side case to try to help block the heat from the exhaust. I was thinking of some sort of heat protection tape both underneath the side case (facing the exhaust) as well as another layer inside the case on the bottom. Would that help?

I have done a search on related keywords and didn't see anything.

I know there are exhaust wraps- I don't think that will help. I'm more trying to keep the temps inside the side case a bit lower if the bike's been at high RPMs for many hours.

What exactly is the temperature inside the cases after your long runs? Are you contemplating hauling human organs for transplant, fresh meat, or ice cream as a member of the gig economy?

Put the stuff that you want to remain cooler in the right side case.

Never noticed that, but then I had aftermarket pipes

Just by chance I had my laptop in the non-exhaust side case, which was good and mostly clothing in the side case near the exhaust. Previous bikes I've had with side cases (a TDM with Givi bags, an FZ1 with Krauser bags) never had temp differences. If heat/insulation tape can help mitigate some of the heat, it seems like a decent modification and one that wouldn't be seen mostly.

For your laptop you could make a pouch out of a product like double-insulated Reflectix foil and stow the device within it. Use duct tape to assemble it. I use zippered case liners in my side cases. Maybe you do that already. You could insulate them, too.

The TDM has an upswept tail upon which the cases would be mounted. That would put them further from exhaust heat. This concern about hell-on-wheels should be easily mitigated with very little effort. Start with the psychological component first.
