Title: Steering Head Adjustment
Post by: rocketbrick on September 09, 2024, 08:23:24 PM
Hey y'all, back onto some maintenance.

At 60mph+ on my '94 K75S, I get slight bar wobble (especially if I let go of the bars). I've been looking things up, and I feel like it might need a steering head adjustment or replacement. They have been replaced by the PO before, and luckily, he's my uncle (so I can get some details as to when it was done).

Now, the question is - how do I properly diagnose if it's the bearings? I need to change the tires this coming winter anyway, but I would like to know about any other big jobs that need to be done in the off-season.

Thanks in advance!

First thing I would try is to tighten the steering head.  When I replaced the bearings in my bikes I had to go back after about a thousand miles and tighten the steering up a tiny bit to take up the slack from the bearings seating in.  It doesn't take much, but it makes an improvement.

Got it - just tightening it then. I think I have that wild-looking BMW spanner somewhere. I know Chris Harris says just use a chisel and a hammer but I don't want to mess it up too bad since I'm not removing it (yet).

I'll keep my results posted here!

per latch's post, on the K75 aren't  first not suppose to loosen the grub screws that hold the dampener in place?  That pesky silicon block will also give a false wheel flop.
