Gentlemen….Im not getting divorced over this.
Someone is selling a 1996 K1100RS near me. The bike has 13k on the clock and looks pristine. Asking $1700. The bike can’t be test ridden because the owner says the starter relay has issues. I will be bringing a starter relay to see if she is suffering from stuck starter relay syndrome. ( please add comment )
The ABS light is also blinking ( my k bikes don’t have abs, is there misery in repairing this ) ?
I would not mind going through her to lube and verify splines..YAADA YADDA YADDA…
Bottom line….this would put a 3rd K in my stable and I would have to flip one.
What are the values of the 16v bikes? Horsepower not withstanding, are these the cream of the K bike line? …if pristine?

Not sure about the '96 ABS, I am more familiar with ABS1 which I think was a simpler system.
However, the problem could be as simple as starting the bike with a low battery or a loose connector. There is a procedure to clear ABS faults by grounding one of the pins on the diagnostic connector under the seat.
IMO, the 16 valve engines seem to have more grunt in the lower mid-range and accelerate with a little more urgency at lower engine speeds. In other words, the fun starts at a little lower rpm.

Thanks Griff, I see you have or had a few of these. I assumed with 1100 under me these would be faster. What are the other perks. The parts don’t seem to interchange much with the rest of the line. Similar to the S version of the R 1100. Are these bikes special or the parts just are harder to get? Or both? What about $$ values?

One of the other perks is that it helps you sweat off excess weight because it's likely to be much hotter to ride in South Florida than a K75S. Another perk is that it will help to continue your physical conditioning because it's 90lbs heaver than a K75S so when you drop it, your lats, traps, and quadriceps will get worked out. It will likely provide opportunity to develop your skill at body panel repair after a drop, too.
It's a later model so more of its parts are likely to be available. It has a later model of ABS so some of the bugs were worked out of the ABS brake system it received. Its engine management control unit system differs from the K75. Because it's heavier and runs quicker, it will be easier to kill armadillos and other critters on Alligator Alley or the Tamiami Trail. It's a useful tool for traveling long distances with lots of gear quickly with more stability. Just view all of johnny's photos of his travel on one—on slab, through twisties and along the gravel roads of the Southwest mesas.
As an investment, I can see a pristine model bringing top dollar at a Bring A Trailer sale if the Moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter is aligned with Mars but elsewhere, the sale outcome would be a tossup. You could always transfer its transmission, swing arm and rear drive to a 75—like several owners have done—and then you'd own a real Special K.

I don’t need another powerful, heavy, hot machine. My experience with 2 R1100RS models was thrilling, if not dangerous. Especially in NYC, my old stomping grounds. These bikes were not a good fit for me… even with heated grips. That being said, I always relish the chance to own a special machine…Ahem, I am not referring to past girlfriends. Any similarities are coincidental 😜😜
If I move forward on this one, my hope would be braking even. (Pun intended )

Low mileage and good condition you can't go wrong. Starter relay is no biggie. ABS flashing is normal until she runs and both brakes have been activated. Likely there's no issue with the ABS. She has more grunt and doesn't have the torque hole that the K100 had at (what?) about 1500-2000 rpm. Engine still has vibrations. Technology is the same, ABS is different from ABS1, so a lot of parts are the same. Never rode a RS myself but the seating position is somewhat different.
