Ok So newly acquired Brick;1990 k75 ; was missing trip reset dial...So I got the needle nose pliers and spun that sucker around...IT Works!...suddenly, the speedo AND odometer stopped working for about 3 miles. just as suddenly she came to life...Qustion: What correlation could spinning the dial have with the electric pulses to speedometer. PS the guy probably REMOVED the dial!

Perhaps rotating the knob stem overcame possible obstructive schmutz between the gear teeth or oxidation in the connection to, and within, the gear motor.

My thoughts would be that it was a coincidence. Yes the speedo and odo use the same electrical pulse, but it splits inside the cluster so one would not have any effect on the other. Even if the odo totally stops, it should have zero effect on the speedo.
If both stopped, I'd look for a loose/dirty electrical connection.

Gentlemen, As a follow up….I discarded the speedometer with the broken re set button, purchased different speedometer cluster….the SPEEDOMETER & ODOMETER stopped working today…tap tap on the glass ….BOTH WORKING! The original cluster did the same thing. Could it be the 24 pin connector? TIA.

Probably a connection inside the pod, multiple threads and articles about care and feeding of early K speedo pods. If you still have the old one I'd take it apart for practice before diving into the new one.

Ok I have modified my post….Closely watching Speedo today it was not keeping up with speed. The needle was showing 20-25 MPH while I was doing a good 40. Then it went to zero. At the next traffic light I tapped on unit & it livened up the gauge to normal. The odometer stayed steady.

Within the last few days Speedometer and Odometer have stopped functioning at the SAME time. A slight tap to the speedo glass has got BOTH to resume normal operation. From what I understand from Motobrick posts, the electric signal splits after entering the speedometer housing. therefore can I assume the problem lies with the 24 pin connector? I will be taking the speedometer apart. The fabled 3 pin connector will be addressed as well as looking at and possibly changing Odo gears. This cant be coincidence or the indicator at rear. as soon as I tap glass...they BOTH return. What Gives?

As Chaos suggested in post #4, it could be one of the connections—the three-pin inside or the 24-pin—is dirty or loose. Get some DeoxIT D5 and clean up the connections.

Thanks Laitch, Those were the two places I was going to start, as posted on MOTOBRICK..I wasn’t sure from the reply if there were any other “trouble” places on bike or in speedometer. I’ll change gears while Im in there. Thanks again!

AAARRGGHH!!! Gentlemen, If you follow this line from beginning the speedometer and odometer have been giving me trouble since purchase….with two different speedo units. I have disassembled the “ newer” unit to clean up the 3 pin connector ( high quality copper paste) and lightly file and detox the 24 pin connector with high quality electric contact cleaner…
The speedometer ( and odometer) works for a bit, then stops…mostly in cold weather….Please let me know where the line of thinking goes. Could it be the sensor by the rear drive? Logical thinking would lead me to believe it’s not the speedometer since two are having the same issue….

Could be the pick-up at the rear.... remove and clean... if not already done.

Ok so this is the original 1990 Speedo.Chaos has recommended I take apart non working unit to practice. Sooo here it goes.These contacts ( see photo) are on lower right and look corroded. Before delving further, do these 4 contacts relay speedometer and odometer signal? TIA The 3 pin connection ( usual suspect ) looks fine and was addressed. Any other contacts inside this unit while I have her open? [ Invalid Attachment ]

Since you're in the exploration phase with the old unit, I'd go all-in and do a full disassembly, laying out parts (labeled) on poster board. Then you could see if there's good reusable pieces, and where they fit. Great winter project. Cheers

Well… that answers THAT! It appears the corroded pins ( and ribbon ) take a bee line directly to pin # 22/23…(speed sensor and ground) …thankfully there appears to be good continuity…the weak portion of equation would be where the ribbon / pins marry to chip board underneath…it appears the interior was under water at some point ( see rust stains in photo ) The question would be wether the chip board gets compromised or outright ruined when wet? I would need to get one prior to disassembling the Speedometer currently in use.

You probably already know, cluster housing updates included a semi-permiable membrane vent on the bottom cover. It'd be easy to drill a 1/2" hole in the bottom and glue Hyvent or Tyvek over it.

Ok so this is a 1990 and has the holes…this looks like it was Pooled water not humidity. The question still begs whether that chip board ( or the one in the good speedometer) is compromised
