I don't know what seat this is referred to as (low/regular?), but it's what is on my 85 K100RS right now.

Now, I went and bought a Corbin gunfighter solo seat without doing research on seat variations, and I'm left with this.

Not to mention, the mounting hardware is not the same as the stock seat, and the Corbin is missing it's own hardware to mount it, so I don't know what's different between the two of them.
Is there some kind of conversion kit for an 86+ seat to an 85? Any guidance is appreciated, I'd hate to have wasted a purchase. As for the gaps between the new Corbin seat and the rear cowl, I figure I can 3D print some spacers to fit inside, then hot glue them to the bottom of the seat, so it's not so hideous.

You will need a 85 and up tail piece.

Lots of those rear cowls are available as they don't work after a Cafe builder "loops" the rear of the frame. I would guess that you can even get one to match your paint.

I see. How is the 86+ seat secured to the 86+ tail piece? Does it use the same hinge mechanism and mounting hardware as the 85, or will I need new hardware?

The hardware on the bike is the same and so is the folding hinge.
You need these for the seat:
