Well, this is not a new problem, but has been low priority. When I bought my K75C, the trip meter was non-functional, but the PO had a new one, complete with the adjuster knob ("button") in the kit. So, several years ago I endeavored to change it while replacing some non-functional bulbs. I fitted the new odometer and bulbs, buttoned everything up, and all was good. Until... the adjuster knob apparently fell out on the road somewhere. 177381
I had the old knob, and have since been keeping it in the under-seat tray, and just adjust the trip meter when needed (usually to track fuel mileage). But, this leaves an open hole on the side of the instrument cluster. Plus, I'd like to have the knob affixed where it belongs.
My question: how does the knob stay "put" on the cluster? I looked at the parts diagram on Duck's site, and it looks like it may just be retained by an o-ring? My adjuster knob (the original one) is only the plastic knob with a notch at the end (I see the diagrams and some pics show a spring, e-clip, etc. think

There's two generations of the trip odo knob, one with a plastic shaft(old) and one with an aluminum shaft. As an 86 yours most likely came with the old one.
I don't have a picture of a complete old one but here's a partial one.

The problem with those was, as you've found out, that when the E-clip at the end pops off the spring no longer holds the knob in. It may be possible to fix it if you take the cluster apart and find the missing parts floating around loose inside of the cluster.

Yes, the newer, better one will replace the old one.

Look inside the cluster first. You can probably repair yours. Just don't pull it out very hard or at all as there's really no need to do anything other than turn it.

Let me see if I can find that stuff. If it's not in the instrument cluster, I might well have it in a bag in my spares with the old (non-functional) trip meter from when I changed it out. Now that you told me how it's supposed to work and shared that pic, I suppose I could find a clip and light spring at ACE if it came down to it.
