Title: WTB: K100RS
Post by: HavanaGold on July 25, 2022, 11:43:47 PM
Posted this over on ADVRider last week. Can't hurt to post here -

I'm interested in finding a well maintained BMW K100RS.

- Within a reasonable day trip of my home in Western Oregon. Ideal to ride the bike first.
- Preferably in white, but open to other colors. Love that graphite that came later.
- 8 valve or 16 valve, doesn't matter.
- Needs to be ready for a cross country trip. Ideal to have the stock tragkorbs.

Thank you

My post reads "ideal to have the stock tragkorbs"

LOL

Seems like I cannot edit it when I click "modify". That is supposed to read "tragkorbs"

Well cool. I guess tragkorb is a name for side cases. Thanks motobrick

WelKome!

I'd lean towards the K100RS4V if you have the opportunity: better front brakes, better forks and 10 more HP. (And if you plan to use it for LD touring it's easier to install cruise control.)

It'll also have Gen III cases that are better than Gen I and Gen II.

Where are you in W OR? North or south?

Cool to hear. Didnt know the cases, brakes, and forks were better. This will be my first bike with hard cases. Thanks for that info. Personally I prefer the 8V wheels, lack of belly pan and 8v valve cover, but I can easily get past those things for a better tourer.

I live near the town of Amity, Oregon. Right smack dab in the middle of the valley. Most of the rides I do are into the desert on the other side of the Cascades. Hoping someday to live there

Thank You

Personally I prefer the 8V wheels

That opinion may change after cleaning them a few times.  I know my opinion changed enough to purchase three spoke wheels for my K75RT.

Interesting. I was just cleaning my Xchallenge the other day. Not the funnest machine to clean. The whole thing is made of nooks and crannies

Good Luck! They show up on craigslist, ebay, cycle trader, or kijiji in Canada on occasion.

I agree that an RS, either 100 or 1100 would be a great bike.

My K75 is what I could afford in 1996 in Germany. And I did a number of drives like in the video until the road gets narrow and your vision narrows and your opportunity to survive any get-off goes to zero!! (Loved your video including the music -- thanks for the Kraftwerk fix).

I also agree that the wheels are hard to clean, requiring a toothbrush. I should have been a dentist maybe.

Here's one in Quebec that I've been eyeing, a long trip for me however and even longer for you. It has 100,000 miles on it and would be about $2,500.00 USD

Look me up if you go there to get it, I'd be a convenient stop maybe 1,000 miles onto your 3,000 mile trip home for you across the top of Lake Superior.

Thanks Past-my-Prime,

Your response is precisely why I wanted to make this post. Thanks. Glad you enjoyed that video. I forget how I came across it, but what I like about it is, yes Kraftwerk, but also how good these K engines sound when they are at higher RPMs. It reminds me a lot of my airheads. At idle, they're quiet.. but higher in the rev range a different sound comes out.

I'll keep your info in mind!

To The Top.

Still searching.

Kept a close eye on this one -
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1992-bmw-k100rs/

Seat, exhaust, ill-fitting handlebars, controls, far-away volume dealer, all yellow flags. Bringatrailer makes it easy to buy nationwide, but it still ain't that easy.

Then there is this one:
https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/1991-BMW-K+100+RS-5022418012

A good looking example. I like it much more than the Bringatrailer one. Not enough though to make up for the distance to Oregon.

For some reason those BAT bikes always sell for way high prices.  We've watched a few of those auctions here before.

20K 89 RS-SE in Bay Area:

BAT is where the big money guys go to get show stuff.  There is a local seller here who sells stuff on BAT for more than 3 times the normal Craig's List prices.  It's a nice place to look at stuff, but unless you want to just do cruise nights, I would avoid it.
