Title: 95 K75 Kafe' Racer Project.

I picked this up last weekend. It is a 1995 K75RT with 91K miles on it that sat in a field for the last 13 years. It runs, and not bad, but it is really rough.

This will take a few months to finish, but it should be a fun project. I plan to tear it down and lube the splines and replace all the bad parts!

Received the Kafe' Racer seat today. It is a little small, but I think I can work with it. Need to decide if I am going to use the side panels or not. They would definitely need to be trimmed and augmented.

Yeah, it is not long for this world. I suspect it had a purpose at one time,, but I have no idea what it was.

You'll probably need a K75 radiator too.

When der engineers retrofitted the K100RT fairing to a K75 they replaced some K75 parts with K100 parts:

The K75RT has a gas K100 tank which is slightly larger and a tad wider than the K75, C and S tank. (I tink they used the
 K100 tank in order to make the RT inner knee panels easier to fit.)

Since it has a K100 tank it also uses K100 side covers which attach differently than K75, C and S side covers.

It also has a K100 radiator that is slightly larger.  You'll notice that the K75RT's K100 radiator has a bracket at the bottom to push it forward in order to make up for the K75's "missing" front cylinder. This is why the hose goes in front of the crank cover, not through it like the other three K75 models.

I knew about the tank and side covers, not the radiator, though I suspected. So no way to angle it back to make the hose fit?

It MIGHT be possible. I've never tried it. Since radiator hoses are flexible it may very well be possible. There's one way to find out - try it.

Looks like the original K75 radiator mounts are still there, so I could mount a K75 radiator, or just tweak these mounts to tilt the radiator properly. More to come on that.

Mocked up the headlight and mount. Needs a bit of tweaking. Makes the instrument look HUGE. But I am likely going with a cafe racer fairing to hide it.

Did a little more mocking up. swapped the switchgear to the strap-ons, removed the bar risers, and snugged it all down.  Then I trimmed the fairing roughly, mocked up the mounts and propped all the current pieces on it.

Made a test wing to cover the radiator side. It still needs work, and I learned a lot about bending 1/4" ABS plastic.

What size are your new handlebars? 7/8" or 22mm?

7/8=22.23mm and the throttle/clutch perches have a tight diameter tolerance so they won't fit on most 7/8" bars.

Have you tried to put the throttle/clutch perches on your new handlebars yet?

That's great. I know others who have had 7/8" handlebar issues and I had some 7/8" Renthal bars once that wouldn't accept K perches.

It looks like they're from China and are probably 22mm, not 7/8". The title says 7/8" but the description says 22mm and has the weight listed in kg.

Sharp eyes will note that my welding is not great, but it has improved dramatically. Fortunately none of it is structural.

I'm likeing how it is coming along. Note that the muffler and rear foot peg brackets are not long for this world either.

Minor work done today. Trimmed the inner fender to match the hoop. It should keep the crap off the rest of the internals. I hate wide open as it limits riding.

What exhaust is that? Is it made to slip right on the the K75's exhaust header collector?

I guess you haven't run the yet bike but do you have any idea of how loud it is?

Does it clear the  center stand when the center stand is up?

A bit of trimming and the adapter fit the DB killer and is all snug.

No idea how loud, but I suspect it is not bad.

I need to add a bumpstop for the sidestand, to the muffler clamp. No idea about the centerstand yet. But I am sure it will clear. No doubt it will need a bumpstop too.

I'll bet that exhaust weighs a bit less than the factory unit.

I found this mouse nest behind the airbox on a K75RT that I helped a friend bring back to life. It looks like the mouse was stockpiling D-Con poison which makes no sense to me.

Before hooking up and filling the radiator, it's a good time to jump 12V to the radiator fan (violet/yellow & brown connector) to make sure that it still works. Replacing it now would be easier than replacing it later.

Just curious, but why didn't you at least rinse off the bike before starting to work on it?  Are you building a rat bike?

Personally I hate doing anything on a dirty machine, and the first job with any "new" bike is a good cleaning, followed by detailing every part that I touch for repair or restoration.  For me anyway, working on a clean bike inspires a higher level of craftsmanship.

I guess it's different strokes for different folks.

I would have, but the day I picked it up it was scorching hot, and once I started removing plastics to get to the parts that needed cleaning I just kept going. In the end I will have to split the bike for the spline lube anyhow, so I will clean it then.

Found an interesting situation that I only have seen on R-Bikes. The front brake master cylinder appeared locked up, even with the calipers removed. Surely this must mean a bad master cylinder? Nope, the brake line from the Master Cylinder was completely blocked. Once removed, the master cylinder acted normal. Good news for me!

Finally had time to get back to the project. I wanted to check the seals and splines, so removed the swingarm, then the transmission. Fortunately the splines look good. There is significant corrosion on the clutch components, but the clutch friction plate looks great. I will address the rust, and lube the splines. and reassemble the trans and final drive. The swingarm pivot pins look great!

If it were me, on a bike with that many miles, while I have the trans off, I'd pull the clutch apart just to measure the clutch plate so that if it's near the end of it's life then I could replace it (or at least know how much life is left.) Min spec is 4.5mm. New is 5.55.

It might also not be a bad idea to replace the clutch nut O-ring with a Viton one. (19x4)

The six bolts around the perimeter that hold the clutch together can be sticky. Use heat and a good Allen wrench when removing them. They have shallow heads and can strip if you're not careful. DAMHIK :laughing1:

IN THEORY, you're supposed to replace those six bolts and their lock washers with new but I re-use the old ones and it's never been an issue.

A mini nail puller can be used around the perimeter to pry the clutch apart:

Changed direction on the fender. I didn't like the straps, so I filled the holes and made brackets to mount the fender under the mounts.

A few minor things done. Also finally got the lower radiator hose through the hole in the crank case cover, PITA!

Had to reuse the left side upper radiator hose, the replacement was too short.

Added the new SS brake lines. Not happy with the front, too tight. This is full extension and has a bit of slack, but not as much as I would prefer.

For sure. However, if you remove the wire bracket and tilt the radiator back to the original position, it allows it to be done.

Normally, I don't like cafe conversions.  I consider them hacked up and ruined machines, but your bike seems to get it right.  I really like the fairing which works nicely with the OEM "lunchbox" instruments.  The color scheme of the paint work goes well with the blacked out mechanicals.  Even the seat, which makes my a$$ cringe, looks good with the overall lines of the bike.

I also like that your photos avoid the macho "urban warrior" theme with the graffiti covered dumpster surrounded by garbage and empty beer cans.  That cliche is such a gay joke. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

All in all, very nicely done!  You have a true gentleman's cafe bike.  It would go well with a tweed jacket and corduroy slacks.

Thanks, I have never been a good Cafe Racer fan. They often look contrived and or trash art more than functional. To be fair, I wouldn't want to ride this far. The riding position and handlebars don't work well with my 60 year old back and large tummy. That said, it rides pretty good and has all the stuff to make it legal and a generally all weather bike.

As for the instruments, yeah, I considered a different cluster, but the cost and reduced functionality weren't in the cards for a bike I never really intended to keep.

I has been a fun project though, and I will likely sell it for just enough to break even given the higher miles on it.
