Title: New member introduction - 86 K100
Post by: aakprrt on June 01, 2022, 12:56:12 PM
Hello all,

Working on my high mileage blue 86 K100. Great bike, run into a few problems so far: starter sprags stuck (fixed!) and an issue with the seat lock (seat latch part won't actually latch, cannot figure out what's up there -- key turns, able to use helmet lock etc)

Bike came to me with 100+ miles on the speedo but the speedo isn't original so who knows! Could be more!

Bought from a very talented fellow who did a lot of work replacing all the worn parts with OEM BMW parts and so this bike is in surprisingly excellent mechanical shape! A little beat up, but she runs! Still quite a bit of work to do but happy to be able to ride again.

Currently based in MD but we are relocating back to Texas -- great riding down there.

Previous rides: 97 BMW R1100R, 81 Suzuki GS450, 82 Suzuki GL650

The hook in the seat lock is most likely broken:

Not uncommon. The cause of this is that people don't make sure that the seat is latched so the post on the seat rides on top of the hook while riding and it eventually wears through and breaks off the hook.

Ah yes that is EXACTLY the problem! Looking down into it the hook is very clearly not present. Alas! Time to search for a new mechanism, or brainstorm a fix.
