Title: what bikes will this seat fit
Post by: gard on May 21, 2022, 03:50:21 PM
I have a Russell day long seat I bought used to try out, the mounting did not fit my '85K100 but I attached it with a shoestring and liked the comfort. I bought the correct one off ebay that I am having Russell rebuild. I would like to sell the first seat, hate the idea of tossing it in the dumpster. Russell says based on the SN in was made in 1987. it would be easier to sell if I knew what models and years it would fit on.  All k100 and k75 models past 1986? Any others?

I did spend a couple hours trying to search the subject but my skills are obviously sub par.(http://)

There is some sort of number cast into the plastic. I have been unable to find any mounting hardware.

I'm sure that there are others that may specifically know better than I, but from what I've read over the years, the seat mount for the '85 and possibly earlier, is a different style mount and that most all bikes after that year use the same hardware and mount type... k75's, k100's and k1100's.
From what I see of the different bike designs, the bike/seat combo that has the side grab handles part of the seat mount and not the rear tail cover mount(up to 08/85), use different seat mounting hardware. I see this design only on certain K100 models/years both EU and USA versions.
Starting 09/85(ie model year '86) BMW changed the tail cover and mounted the grab handles to the tail cover, as well as changing the seat and mount hardware.

So in a nut shell, the seat you're trying to sell, should fit any bike with the passenger grab handles mounted to the rear tail cowl... but that's just my opinion from searching parts databases.. YMMV.
Anyone interested in this seat should continue to do your own research on this.

Yep, it's an 86 and later seat pan.

Thanks for that, it is about what I remembered hearing. I have also seen mention of some kind of low seat option where the tool box was removed, but I think this one looks more like standard? Good info that it should fit any of the newer K bike models.

My bike is the '85 model year so I never really kept up with the various improvements over the years. Seems a little strange spending almost as much for a new seat as what the bike is worth but its still running good...

Yes. It's a regular, not low, seat.

I have purchased a new Russell seat so now would like to get rid of this older one, see above for photos. I have it listed on Ebay "Motorcycle seat Russell Daylong for BMW K bike 1986" feel free to make an offer, I kind of hate to toss it in the bin.
