Title: low seat installation instructions
Post by: jagarra on February 26, 2022, 02:44:45 PM
I am looking at ordering all the pieces in install a low seat on my 87K75S.  Is there instructions as to where all the pieces go? Seems there are a lot of small parts, latches, clips and hardware that clarification on where they go and proper installation instructions would be of great help.

Thanks frankenduck, that helps a lot.

While you're at it take some pics for me and I'll make that page better.  I'm a bit over 6 feet and don't deal with low seats much so I don't have too many low seat install pics.

One thing I did notice was that on the installation of the clips on the rear tail section there are no bosses or anything to indicate where to drill the holes to mount them.  The instructions did not mention any measurements, so that is of some concern.  Maybe a member that has the option installed could fill in this information.

thanks again,

Are there any plugged holes in the tail cowl.  All of my bikes had holes in the cowl that appear to be for attaching the low seat mounts.

Maybe you can post a photo of your rear cowl.

I went out to check yesterday after I saw the instructions, it is perfectly smooth, no dimples or anything to indicate where to drill.  Looking at the color of the piece, it looks like it is original to bike as it matches tank (bike had some replacement parts painted). I can take picture if needed.

Since your K75 is a 1987 (early) BMW may not have been factory pre-drilling those low seat hook holes into the tail cowl yet.

Here's a pic that you might find useful:

For one member's instructions concerning successfully mounting a low-seat, click this link (https://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=9945.msg84570#msg84570).

If you have some double sided tape (like 3M trim mounting tape) then you could experiment with positioning them and probably get them pretty close.

BTW: Before you install the lock in the frame it can be "rekeyed" to work with your ignition key.

For one member's instructions concerning successfully mounting a low-seat, click this link (https://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=9945.msg84570#msg84570).

I've got a K1100 with the low seat option, this all looks basically identical to the setup on mine.
Only difference is that my ECU is way different so I imagine the mount is pretty different as well.

For the center mount I have an idea. Maybe you could leave the adhesive cover on the mount and bolt it to rubber piece nice and straight. Roll up some masking tape and put a piece on either side where the adhesive would be, but "vertically" so it can roll up or down. Then, just center up the rubber piece and stick it to the tank, hopefully you should still be able to move it up and down to fine tune it. Finally, just unbolt it from the mount and put a masking tape frame around it to get your mounting spot.

I can take some pics of where my latch handle is attached to the frame if you'd like.

I've also got the issue of one of my rear seat hatches popping out as BrickMW mentions in the above post. I'm wondering if my almost 30 yr old 60k mile seat covering is starting to shrink up a bit?

Thanks for the offer, but I have a special mount for the electronics that give the seat the needed clearance.  It is basically the mount without the tray on top, still hooks to the 4 points as original.

Right on I fabbed one up for mine as well. It, uh, works. Lol
Found out the ECU had been bouncing off the frame for who knows how long after I rode it home 230 miles when I got it.

Good luck with the install though I like the low seat on mine!

Why don't the two of you post some photos showing the details of your adaptations to help others who might encounter this situation?

This is what I came up with for my K1100LT.
I'm gonna do write up about the recent work I did to mine when I get a chance

It's interesting you had to fab a holder for that unit.  On the K75, they have a special housing for it # 61 35 1 459 782 that is located on the fiche for the seat on that model, snaps in where the original tool tray was above the battery.  Looked for your bike, but it wasn't located on the same spot in the fiche, maybe somewhere else showing the tool tray under the seat.

did some checking on real OEM seems that your bike does not use the holder from previous models.  These are the models that used this carrier for the low seat option.
