Title: Show me all the grounding points, K75 not starting
Post by: Steviescumbag on October 07, 2021, 11:01:27 AM
Hi Fam,

I went on a trip and after 4 weeks my bike started up fine. A week later it didn’t.
I’m running into an issue where by brick doesn’t turn over. I hear a bussing sound when I press the starter that comes from around the starter relay area. I’ve had this problem before and I made sure the relay was going and cleaned wiring and grounding contacts, and it started immediately after cleaning a bolt on the frame on the bottom left. I assume it’s kind of the same issue this time.

Can you guys tell me or show me all the grounding points on the bike so I can clean them.

Let me know if you think it’s another issue.

The engine is grounded to the frame at the right-side rear frame member. The main wiring ground connection is a gusset attached to the frame backbone beneath the tank. Photos are attached.

The starter itself is a ground connection; if its internals are dirty that will cause numerous problems. If the ignition switch contacts inside the switch housing are burnt, that can intermittently interfere with the starter's function. If you rap on the starter relay with a screwdriver handle and the starter will work, the starter relay contacts might be oxidized or burnt and cleaning them could restore function. If the battery positive or its ground connections aren't tight that will also affect starting.

If you're hearing a whirring noise instead of a buzzing, the starter sprag clutch could be clogged and will need to be cleaned by one means or another to restore reliable function

The battery grounds to the left side of the transmission right next to the shift lever. The frame grounds where it bolts to the transmission and at the bellhousing.

If you suspect a bad ground then the first thing to do is check/clean both ends of the cable from the battery to the transmission, then the grounding point under the tank.

If the starter is dirty inside then that often manifests itself as gremlins in flasher relay functionality.

Since you think you hear a buzzing from the starter relay area, you might also want to test it. there's a good you tube on testing relays.

A "quick & dirty" way to test relays is to put a 9V battery up to the 85 & 86 terminals and listen for a click.

From what I understand, which is not a lot, if it passes the click test , it may still be bad, but if it doesn't, it is def bad.

Correction:

Quick check: if the starter motor brushes are dirty or too worn to provide ground the headlight does * NOT * light up when the ignition is turned on.

Cleaning the starter is a good maintenance practice.
