Title: K1100 LT Non ABS front brake hose length
Post by: DarkTidings on September 23, 2021, 03:52:04 PM
As the title says! I have looked through the forum and it is talked around but never directly answered. I need to know the length of the front brake hose from the master cylinder to the y connector. If it is in a tech manual or already on here, feel free to shame me and delete the post!

I'm pretty sure that ABS was standard on all K1100LTs so you'll have to do something custom.

Hmm... I guess that would make the lack of answer somewhere in the forum make sense. Thanks for the quick response!

I discovered that dedicated repair manuals usually describe what is on a motorcycle, not what isn't. :laughing4-giggles:  That's why I always find one or more to use. There is a K1100LT/RS repair manual downloadable from the Service Manual section (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=11014.0) on Motobrick's Home page. There is also in that section a K1100 Rider's manual that describes the moto's features and explains the ABS system.

ABS was standard on the K1100 models and there were two types—ABSI and ABSII. The '96 should have ABSII. Manuals and information about ABS can be downloaded from the site. Poke around the Service Manual section and the Service Bulletin section (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?board=61.0).

Or you can take the easy route and look in the parts catalog and see that there's no non-ABS front brake lines.

But why isn't it there? Is it a misprint? Was the manufacturing stopped? Did a second-hand parts dealer buy up the remaining stock on speculation that this day inevitably would come? And what role did Covid-19 play?  :laughing4-giggles:

All jokes aside, none of that seems to be true, but thanks.

It still doesn't give me the length. I'll just make a custom one. Cheers

Just get a chunk of cheap vinyl hose, 8mm i.d. is good, and lay it out where you want your line to run, and trim it to length.  When you're done measure it and you will have the minimum length you need.

Interesting anecdote, during WWII, the design length of the V-2 rocket was determined by towing a long log from the rocket factory to the proposed launch site.  Whenever an obstacle presented, the log was shortened to get through.  When it finally reached the launch site, it was measured and that became the length of the rocket.

And to take this thread even further off course:

The reason that military tanks are called tanks is because back during WWI when the Brits started working on developing tanks they called them tanks in order to fool the enemy into thinking that they were doing R&D on vehicles to get water to soldiers at the front.

To add to the fascinating theme emerging here: Poppin' Johns aren't exploding toilets.  icon_cheers
