Title: Shorai Lithium battery long term experience
Post by: schrocketeer on September 14, 2021, 12:25:17 PM
Does anyone have recent experience (newer than the post from 2017 here) using a Shorai lithium ion battery in their brick?

Hoping for real world, long term experience with a Shorai in a BMW K-bike.

Mainly looking to see if a Shorai is worth the extra prices over a lead acid (traditional plates or AGM).

Thanks

Not a long term test, but some moto-journalists played with one in a dirt bike at https://www.batterystuff.com/kb/articles/battery-articles/shorai-lfx-lithium-iron-phosphate-batteries-abuse-test.html

Attached is a comparison I've started for Shorai's two different recommendations, versus the conventional lead acid (gel) I can pick up at the auto parts store 15 minutes away. Sorry the URLs are incomplete since I just snip'ed from a spreadsheet. Re-copied below.

These are for my 1985 K100RT:

Typo on my part for the Shorai 100% Warranty. It's 12 months, not 6 months like in the spreadsheet above. Direct paste from https://shoraipower.com/customer-service

The warranty is a pro-rated policy, divided into two periods from date of purchase within the USA. Coverage is as follows:

Month                   1~12   13~60
Discount from MSRP   100%   50%

No issues with the Shorai Lithium in my K100RT after about a month.
17 lb weight saving.
With the smaller dimensions, I used multiple tie-straps/zip-ties for now.

Anyone have experience with a better way to secure the Shorai? I've never had the official top battery hold down piece.

How much shorter is the Li battery than the regular battery?  You could put a block of HDPE of that thickness on top of the Li battery and then use the factory hold down.

Or you could use some M6 threaded rod to make shorter bolts for the battery hold down. Or shorten the factory bolts and thread the ends with an M6 die.

In his post he indicated that he doesn't have a battery hold-down, but they are available, or can be fabricated simply enough.
