Title: Rear Wheel Wobble

Hi All,

Prepping for my ride this week and was about to change the oil.  I grabbed the rear wheel and it has some wobble/looseness to it. 

It is not the wheel (lug bolts are nice & tight) but in the differential/hub.  I check the Clymer and there is a section about preloading the bearing that refers to shims.

How much looseness is acceptable? The bike has 83K on the clock (93 K1100RS.)  Help please..

So Clymer says this unit is bullet proof and unit go 150000 miles without issue and not an easy user serviceable part as it needs a ton of special BMW tools.

Can’t find much about play but it seems more than it should.  Hmmm

There will be issues if the rear drive oil isn't changed regularly or if the oil in the drive is at a habitually low level and the moto has been ridden plenty. There shouldn't be play in the assembly. It could be the crown wheel bearing. Read about changing the crown wheel bearing in this thread (https://www.k100-forum.com/t5697-how-to-check-and-replace-the-final-drive-crown-wheel-bearing-and-seal) which contains examples of both monolever and paralever parts.

Maybe the wheel bolts are just loose.  :laughing4-giggles:

I wish it was just a loose wheel. 

There is definitely play at the 12/6 O'clock position.  That article you attached is very helpful, thank you!  Quickly reviewed it but need to reread.  I don't think that they spoke of special tools.  Hopefully since I am not changing the gears I can just swap in new bearings.

I am at least the third owner and with 83K on the clock, who knows..   Looks like whn I get back from my trip I will be looking into new bearings.  Hopefully the gears are not damaged.

Check the bearing where the FD connects with the swing arm as well. I had mine go bad and that gave me lots of play in the rear wheel as you can see in the attached video.

Double Checked tonight, it is all in the final drive..  The swing arm, etc. is all nice and tight without play.
