Title: Additional horn relay...answered thanks
Post by: Quzzy on April 30, 2020, 01:39:38 PM
Have just ordered a Denali Soundbomb horn, it comes with a relay which I would happily use, but as theres an existing standard relay, is it necessary?
If I just use the existing, perhaps I should beef up the wire from that to the horn?

thanks

It would depend on what the amp rating is on the oem relay and how much more the Denali uses.  When I installed a Denali Soundbomb on my bike I determined that there was an increase  in current draw that was enough to be concerned about.  I don't remember how much but I decided it would be prudent to install the relay and bigger gauge wire.

Thannks, did you use the OEM relay to trigger the additional one?

I fitted a Nautilus 140 Db air horn and used the OEM  horn wire to trigger it. I had it configured that I could switch between the OEM horn and the air horn plus the OEM. I was originally  told that the 140 Db horn was illegal but have since found out that it is not a problem.

The OEM horn relay has contacts rated for 30 amps.  The 15 amp fuse that supplies the horn will blow before there is a problem with the relay or the wiring.

The relay supplied with the aftermarket horn is to protect the horn button contacts on bikes that don't already have a relay.
