Title: does the fork top plug tighten?
Post by: blackie1 on April 07, 2020, 09:36:28 PM
1991 k75rt

i have just replaced my fork oil

to tighten the filler plug at the top of the fork , i held the "top plug"? still with an open ended spanner and at the same time tightened the filler plug with an allen key.

no problems there.

my question is does  that "top plug" tighten up also.
the filler plug is tight but my top plug still can spin either way with a spanner on it.

i did tighten it a turn to see if it would tighten up, but it is very tricky as it only has two flat sides on it to get any purchase on,  so you can only get a 1/4 turn with the spanner , then i was using a small drift to tap the plug around further so i could again get a spanner onto it.

the top plug did not appear to be winding in and tightening up.
i hope i have explained my question clearly enough.

happy to clarify if needed

It doesn't tighten, it's held in with a spring clip and is sealed with an "O" ring and is free to rotate. I cobbled up a spanner to hold on the two flats to make my life a bit easier.

cheers martin.
i am pleased i came in to ask the forum otherwise i would be out in the garage perpetually turning it lol

i was just happy to get the drain plugs on without stripping them. that has to be the most delicate operation on this machine.

thanks for the speedy reply digger
