Title: Spline final drive lube data
Post by: schrocketeer on February 18, 2020, 11:24:25 AM
Here is some data for Final Drive spline lube discussion. The two photos on the left are at my first tear down. I didn't have Staburags or HondaMoly, so I used Valvoline Full Synthetic from Advance Auto. The two pictures on the right are from my inspection this weekend, after 15k miles with the Valvoline. From what I can see, there is no degradation of either of the connecting side of the splines. I do have Staburargs from Beemerboneyard for the clutch splines and the final drive splines I'll finish up this week. Inconclusive test results

Z=16 are less prone to wear vs. Z=20 FD & DS

easy way to check spline status without taking final drive off..

put bike on center stand.  put in neutral.  grab back tire and gentle roll it forward and back.  if all the splines are perfect and the final drive is good, there will be NO "slop".  the more slop you feel, the worse the spline wear is.

I should have known.  I had a TON of slop, like 3-4" or rotation of the back wheel!!

I'm not going to repost what the FD looks like but suffice to say, I'm looking forward to installing a replacement (once we work out logistics of shipping and payment).

my 94 has a new driveshaft and a fresh "Anton" fully rebuilt FD.  there is literally ZERO slop.  shifts are soooo smooth and on/off throttle transitions are seamless.  awesome.

my 92 has original, well maintained DS and FD.  61k miles.  a little bit of slop, but not much.  the difference in how the two bikes shift and respond is night and day.
