Title: 91 100 RS 16v coolant sensor
Post by: TommyT on November 22, 2019, 01:29:15 PM: Is the Coolant sensor number 13 in the attached diagram, NTC plug? The bike starts great, idles greats, runs great for about 15 minutes and then it blogs down a little at first, then more and more. I am guessing for now that the Motronic system is thinking that the engine is still cold and I like to check the sensor to see if it is working, if I can find it first. What does NTC stand for?

Oh BTW the temp gage is not showing any readings either if that matters.

If my memory is correct, the resistance is about 2500 ohms at room temperature and about 200 ohms at engine operating temperature.

The text on the diagram you've provided explains how you can find it.

The temperature gauge on the dash is connected to a sensor that takes the place of the combo pump drain plug. Its reading is a separate function unrelated to the coolant temperature (NTC) sensor.

NTC = Negative Temperature Coefficient, gee why didn't I figure that out. I used to attend a weekly technical meeting which the leader was not as technical as the attendees. He had a rule that you had to use the full meaning of an acronym before its use and then you could use it freely. Failure to do so resulted in putting $1 into a jar which brought pizza for lunch at the end of the month. there was usually a lot of pizza at the end of the month. the ex military people had the hardest time with that rule.

One reason might be that you didn't utilize a Google search with the search term define NTC.

All the branches have their own lingo, as a retired AF member I always found the USN abbreviations/acronyms a mystery.

I did try but i only did NTC, i got National Traing Center

You must type the word define preceding NTC, or any other term, initial or word you're searching. In the half-dozen times I've done that with a cleared history, the definition of Negative Temperature Coefficient was presented. I even located the definition when using your term, NTC plug. It wasn't the first definition but it was among the hits on the first page.

These search engines are fantastic tools.
