Title: Iconic 22litre topbox
Post by: Soggz on September 07, 2019, 11:18:45 AM
Hi.
Just picked this up from fleabay,but...
apparently, it’s from a generation II set. Do I need a different rack than the one I have?(see pic).
I have no mounting plate with it, but even so, the rack seems too wide for it to fit. I’m guessing it’s the wrong one.

My 1995 22-l top case mounts to a very different cowling rack.  The cowling rack appropriate to my top case has vertical rather than horizontal rails.  The gap between the two central rails is much wider than the other gaps between the rails, because the mounting plate's locking mechanism for this case is in a relatively wide central hump which must fit in between these two central rails.

Those are photos of the correct rack. One photo shows a side profile of the correct rack on a rear cowl; another shows the correct rack with the mounting plate next to it. The plate snaps into the space between the interior rails of the rack. The pin passes through the center of the top case's interior floor, through the hole then is rotated to lock the case to the plate.

So what is the rack I have?,and will the other one fit in the same holes in the cowl, as it’s from a generation 2 set?

I don't know the origin of your rack. I don't know if the dimensions of the correct rack's cowl fastener locations will coincide with the holes made in the cowl for your moto's current rack.

Your
top case is not designed to fit that rack. The case's bottom recess is designed to conform to the perimeter of the rack for which it was made. Generation numbers don't apply to 22l top cases; their only differences might be how their lid hinges are constructed.

if you're attached to that mounting bracket and can't spring for the BMW original and the scarce-as-hen's-teeth mounting plate, there are aftermarket alternatives.  I have Emgo's box on my Ural, not a sexy as the iconic 22L but sturdy, cheap, and functional with a universal mounting system.  https://www.amazon.com/Emgo-72-32440-Travel-Trunk/dp/B000GVD0VE

nah, I’ve got the 22 litre now. I’ll have to source a different rack. The plate isn’t that rare, here. They were police bikes in the 80’s, so quite a few around. Most Have been cafe’d.

The rack on the cowl you looks similar to the optional OEM top box rack that goes on top of the 22 Lt. I could possibly be used as such if you needed extra storage. However I looked at fitting the optional top rack but I didn't want to stress the lid any futher. Picture of the OEM optional rack for comparison which are even rarer than the 22Lt in OZ.

Hmmm... so a 22 litre iconic top box WITH the optional top rack would be a sight to behold, then? Great, as I’m trying to get my k75 as original as possible.

Soggz I just tried to get a part number but no listing. So are they OEM or are they by an accessory manufacturer? The one that was on Ebay was advertised as OEM. The couple that I have seen over the last 20 years all looked the same slightly tapered as per the posted picture.

I have the one as in Johnny's post. The bolts and holes are close to vertical.

The approximate centre to centre measurements are
Left to right,  front,  172mm (6+3/4")
Left to right,  rear,  160mm (6+5/16")
Front to rear,  137mm (5+3/8")

Daveson I've seen a few of these fitted to the lid of the OEM 22Lt top box. A mate has one and one showed up on Ebay as OEM option. I am currently trying to get more information. If anybody has any more information please post it.

Yep, I wouldn't put weight on the lid though, the lock that the latch hooks to is fixed with a plastic thread on mine,  and it's pretty worn at that already. That's just mine though, after its bid for freedom.

As I said earlier I did look at buying the one listed on Ebay but decided it would put too much strain on the lid. I've had one answer as to whether it's OEM or not, saying not. I'm now trying to find out who made them. I've seen at least two fitted to Bricks in OZ and the one a mate has which came with a 22Lt top box he bought and the one advertised on Ebay as OEM BMW. I've also never seen them associated with any other brand bike. I suspect they might have been an OZ aftermarket thing. Still trying to dig up more information.
Regards Martin.

That may be an old Givi rack.

Givi makes a variety of top racks for there multitude of top cases.

I'm guessing that they are OEM, as there are no other holes in the cowl. So, I suppose it's fitted the same as the top of rack holes?
I have also sourced a original top box rack from flea bay last night for £12.00. Just need a 'slide mount plate' doodah, now. The locking pin came with the box.

The cowls didn't have holes drilled in them from the factory. They were drilled when a rack was mounted as an option. Let us know if these holes line up with the holes on the rack that fits the 22L case.

The OEM retaining plate had thin foam rubber piece glued on the underside that tends to disintegrate with age. You might want to replace it if it's shot or missing. The OEM kit also came with a piece of clear contact adhesive that was attached to the ducktail to prevent paint damage when fitting and removing the plate. I used anti slip deck tape in lieu of the clear.
Regards Martin.

Nice find!  I had the 22L topcase on my '94 K75.  Best fitted box on the market at the time.  The good fit meant a kinda oddly shaped interior, good for small stuff.  The only niggle was the box had to be kept locked or it'd pop open.  Happened as I was following a friend who had one.  Hit a dip and next thing it was raining stuff out.  Mine popped open going over a railroad crossing, luckily nothing of great worth was in it.

Any owner of these iconic creations will likely benefit from installing an external security latch or strap on it. The wire bail onto which that button latch engages inside the box needs bending and forming to create a tight closure.
Title: Re: Iconic 22litre topbox
Post by: Martin on September 14, 2019, 04:23:37 PM
As per Laitch correct adjustment. I've also found that the lid can open due to not being closed properly and the lock's plastic retaining nut loosening. A dab of silicone sealant on the plastic nut that retains the lock will stop it loosening.
Regards Martin.

Funny you all would bring this up. I just installed my 22 back on after loosing a cover out of it. I bent the wire for a nice tight fit. I'll have to lock the box too for extra piece of mind.

Yes, the extra weight of the rack may help to keep it closed. I’m sure I can fashion something up in the laboratory.

After having the lid flip open on the highway and losing what was probably a winning Power Ball ticket and half my rainsuit, I said feck it, reversed the hinge and put a proper Home Depot clasp on it.  No problems since.  More ammunition for my eternal damnation to K bike hell, eh?

As a rack, it’s quite useless, because of the angle. Things just want to fall off of it.

You need to tie things onto it; that's why it has the horizontal bars; otherwise, you need to lower the front tire pressure—maybe even adapting and mounting a smaller rim, say 12" to help level the cowl face—and also to ride veeery slowly avoiding bumps and inclines. Try putting blu-tack on the bottom of things. :-D

I've always considered Reynolds racks to the gold standard for BMW's.  This came with my RT when I bought it.  Much prefer it to having a top case.  Seem to remember that  later racks were upgraded where the rear cowl didn't need to be drilled.

I bought this Reynolds rack for my R100RT almost 20 years ago.  It didn't fit so I hung it on a nail where it's been since.  Any guesses on what Beemer it does fit?

Soggs, I'd love to post a photo but sadly despite my generally good IT skills this website kills me. I've managed occasionally to upload photos but usually when I'm done uploading they disappear.

this is the best one I could find and it's in a thread that you started!!

Piccies of mounting plate and some piccies of the pin. However unless you are reasonably competent and have a good workshop you would be better off either waiting for one to turn up or find a simpler alternative way of mounting it.

Unless I am completely misunderstanding you the plate you are looking for is onn the right of the picture you posted.  The rack itself is on the left and the plate is on the right.  That plate fits into the rack and then the 22 lt box attaches to it.

Motorworks is going to be your best bet, if they don't have what you want you can request that they hold the item and contact you when it becomes available.

What am I missing here???

The MaxBMW parts fiche shows the mounting plate P/N 46 54 2 300 449 for $66.89.  Place an order and you'll have it in two weeks.

I think a point is trying to be made that MaxBMW in New Hampshire, USA is listing them as available. They might not be in house now but they can get them. If they can't get them at all, they list them as NA or backorder.

With a regular search of eBay and other sites, everything turns up eventually though.

yeah, thanks. Shipping from the USA is ridiculous though, as I found out when my final drive turned up from California. The import tax is the one! Dunno what it’s gonna be like with this brexit shit.

I hope Trumps a biker! Lol
