Title: K1100RS by wooboodoo
Post by: wooboodoo on September 05, 2019, 11:54:38 PM
 :welcome

Well, probably more people gonna hate me than like for what I'm doing (even my wife said that I'm crazy and she like original version better) but I hope to share some info with few people who gonna find this thread useful Smile
Few months ago I found online picture of K100 modded by Retrorides by Laurencno Brothers and I fallen in love.
I don't know why, I said to myself this is what I want ! Period.
About 8 years ago we closed small ironwork shop upstate NY but all tools and equipment is still there almost forgotten, so I turned it for new home for my 93 K1100RS.
Originally I was looking to buy a K100 but couldn't find anything in decent condition and reasonable price. After a few months of searching I was lucky to find 1993 K1100RS with 34K miles for $1500, couldn't resist ;)
And here this story begins... actually it begun June second so I have some progress done, I'll try to catch up this thread asap.

It was the next day after purchase...

Yea I know - safety first... don't do this the way I did grab some safety glasses.

I had to extend the pipe to relocate the vin number and make additional support.

Now finally I can play with horizontal suspension arm, for the beginning I got some Chinese, cheap 300mm shock for welding purposes while I was waiting for the British NITRON NTR R1, I trust NITRON more than YSS and will not pay about $1K for Ohlins...

Clean and ready to weld, since I'm crazy about welds it gonna look like there's no weld

So far worst part of this project, it took me almost a day to adjust the seat supports the way I like (accept) these... Wish I had somebody to help me.

Outer welds done, I applied some primer to prevent corrosion will do inner welds when take the frame off the engine but first I have to create some battery holder, still undecided which way to go...

Recently I got awaited shipment so finally I was able to install the shock, not bad but do I really like this color?
In the meantime I found the company Fast Bike Industries LLC and looks like they have in stock metalic black color spring for my shock so I'll order to see which one I like better.

Still trying to figure out how to hide this battery, alone or together with ecu? maybe better place for ecu gonna be under the seat? Idk but will decide next weekend I mean I have to finally because it takes too long... Will appreciate any suggestions maybe some pictures ?

You're making an intricate and well-fabricated design in an adventurous place to throw sparks. :-) Thanks for the clear photos of what's happening. Please keep them coming.

Thank you, sir ! :)
Yes, this place was built to throw sparks, but these not been seen for several years, I hope I will throw much more with the new project that I have in my mind already ;)

I live and work in the city but on my bike I work upstate NY in Gilboa every weekend or so that’s why it takes so long... but the hardest stuff is done now I’ll put everything together slowly.

Well I am not too far away, I am on the other side of RT 28 before you turn to go up to Hunter Mtn. I like to see what you are doing one day and if maybe you need another hand , give one.

Looks like you're about one hour from me if you'll take rt42 then 23A... not so bad especially when you can enjoy the ride and beautiful view. We have to definitely hangout one day !

The next step was finally removing the frame for inner welds, but before I had to double check the seat support angle if both match perfectly... Thankfully these did lol ;)

Since I will rewire whole electric installation I decided to go with motogadget m.unit blue. I think that best spot for this little device gonna be just under the tank with bolts welded directly to the frame for best ground, just making sure everything gonna clear nicely...

Welding, clearing and preparing for paint... I know that powder coating is better option but unfortunately I couldn't find anybody in reasonable distance for this job, my electric oven is too small to fit the frame... oh well even if it could fit instead of powdercoating I would go with cerakote since I'll cerakote all aluminum parts including engine covers.
Anyway, primed with 2K epoxy primer and ready for paint, hopefully it gonna last few years if not I gonna think about it later ;)

Thank you very much ! ;)
As about the cerakote I have two types, the oven cured H series and the air cured C series in the same color and finish. For the suspension arm, seat supports and side engine covers I’ll go with H series but for front engine cover I want to go with C series since there’s oring and I don’t think so it is good idea to bake it in 300*F and it want leaking so I don’t want to remove it and install new one.
Preparing for cerakote is real pain... engine covers was painted from factory so I had to use a paint remover to take as much paint as I could then sand paper and sandblasting. I started blasting with glass media but finish is to fine for me I want it to be more matte so I just got aluminum oxide media 70 grid to cut a little bit deeper.
I’ll try to find time tomorrow to see if I like it better.

I ride around there alot, very pretty roads yes. I do a Hunter Windham loop often.  Let me know when you are up there and I can ride up. I maybe getting a 1100 RS soon, it would be a good ride to stretch it's legs...

Nice work, I really like the seat and spring kits available, not cheap though. Good luck with the rest of your build and keep the pictures coming.

Ok, the next step was to take the engine apart for cleaning and painting. I recorded a short video while engine was still running because I could hear some disturbing noise.

https://youtu.be/IbmzER_MJn0

Folks on FB forum said that’s absolutely nothing to worry about or eventually to inspect the monkey nuts. Looks like monkey nuts are ok to me, now I’m not sure where that noise was coming from? Somebody mentioned old oil... maybe? We’ll see...  However I bought new ones just in case ;)

Taking the engine covers off and separating gear box was a good opportunity to inspect the engine closer.

Looks like the cracked clutch pushrod boot caused long term leak because the back of the gear box was very dirty.

Also realized that the gear position sensor isn’t in good condition I think that I’ll try to apply some new epoxy layer on the top of the wires, hopefully it's gonna help.

As I mention before I’ll apply cerakote on the engine covers and other aluminum brackets and supports...

Well I did start with the front engine cover because of the oring it can’t be baked/cured in 300*F so for this panel I chose an air cured C type cerakote, I painted it and unfortunately I’m not happy with the finish :( it’s way too shiny for me and I have to take it down, probably sand blasting again.

I start to study cerakote manuals all over again and “miracle” ! I found information that there’s an alternative option to cure/bake H type cerakote instead 1 hour in 300*F  2 hours in 175*F !!!

Why does this matter? Well the C type cerakote is one component product and we have no influence for finished product but H type cerakote is 2 component product which requires catalyst and mixing these two components in different ratios will give us different finishes, I’ll definitely go with 24:1 matte finish.

Hopefully next weekend I'll start assembling back the engine and I will attach the frame to the engine, it would be cool and motivating ;)
In the meantime I've checked the screws size and thread pitch to order some quality bolts since the oem look terrible...

What can I say about the front engine cover? Well first of all use tack cloth or very strong compressor, make sure there's no dust in the room... no compromises cerakote is very thin coating and It gonna look crap as my engine cover lol anyway I don't like this shiny finish so I'll respray it with matte. Lessen learned !

My process for gear position switches is to first remove every bit of the old potting compound from around the wires and the switch's cover.  After I clean it thoroughly with brake cleaner to get rid of any grease or oil I mix up some quick set epoxy and repot the wires and cover.

After an overnight to fully cure the epoxy, I pull the switch apart and clean all the internal bits.  When I put it back together I put dielectric grease on the mating surfaces of the switch halves to help keep water out.

Reinstall the switch with stainless socket head Allen screws.  They're easier to get out than the OEM screws.

I thought that I'm done with the sandblasting at least for now, but it looks like I was wrong...
Stand was in very bad condition visually and mechanically so I had to take care of it.

Second issue was cracked side stand aluminum bushing... Thankfully I had some aluminum materials laying around and I could copy that busing in no time.

I painted whole swing arm of course ;) and yes... I took off the frame for powdercoating I couldn't sleep still thinking about it, that project cost me too much work to leave it painted with regular paint I wanted something more durable so i took the frame to the city. At the same time I realized that everything black except the alternator is not best idea so I painted it as well ;) Since I was in "painting mode" I sandblasted the fuel rail and painted it using the same eastwood paint, they say that it's chemical resistant so I'll test it lol

How easy is it to spray that paint? Do you use it straight out of the can?

Thank you Tommy,
The engine covers are painted with cerakote H series then baked in the electric oven at 300*F for one hour. It’s two component paint and depend the surface you want to paint you have two options for best results, for smaller (difficult) parts you can use an airbrush and for bigger touch up spray gun (my preference). All info you can find here https://www.cerakote.com/finishes/?tab=coatings&cat=HSERIES but if you have any questions feel free to contact me. ;)

How did you like the Eastwood stuff?

It looks very legit, covers nicely and dries quickly. However, its too early to say how durable it is. Wish I got it earlier so I could paint the gearbox and engine block it seems to be a better paint than 2K in spray can.

Guys ! If any of you planning to fix the gear position switch I have some hint... I was looking for something small and round in the garage and I found roll of teflon tape, yes the cheapest one, it seats on the K1100RS switch just perfect I think the K100 and K75 switches are the same. All you need to do is notch for wire, I used round file.

Clean the rest of the oem (probably cracked already) protection from the back of the switch using small flat screw driver... Secure the switch (I screwed it to the wood) push in the cable a little bit so epoxy can hold the vinyl sleeve as well.

Install the roll on the switch and fill it with good quality epoxy glue.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49098588477_50453252d5_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2hNF6Mx)IMG_4666 (https://flic.kr/p/2hNF6Mx) by wooboodoo (https://www.flickr.com/photos/137490116@N04/), on Flickr

After few hours using razor blade do the notch vertically on the roll (careful, not too deep) using pliers break the plastic roll then using metal saw blade cut excess of the epoxy (I left about 1/4") A little bit sand paper for smother finish after cutting and done !

Ok then lets continue the journey...
I think the next step was to design the triple tree clamp, I badly wanted some "pocket" for separate gear indicator and motogadget motoscope pro display so Adam (the owner of DIXER PARTS) took care of me and cut excellent clamp. I sandblasted it and cerakoted with the same finish as engine.

As about controls I decided to go with quick throttle from ACCOSSATO, I'm pretty happy with these silicone grips and quality. Got them from OmniaRacing Italy.

Next step was to install Motogadget m-Blaze Disc Bar End LED Turn Signal into the ABM strap-ons handebar.
As you can see on the pic the hole in the ABM strap-ons handlebar is too small for installation so I had to re-drill the holes. It was a two steps drilling process, first bit I used was 1/2” (12,7mm) then second one 15mm.
At the same time I installed the motogadget m.button on the throttle side, I drilled the hole about 3” deep so I could fit m.button device and easily pass the turn signal wires on the side of it. The clutch side handlebar hole is about 1,5” deep.

Factory shocks on K1100s are not very good.

A good bang for the buck replacement is the YSS MZ366-385TRL-01

Appreciate the response, saw that and it’s an ok lead

-but-

NTR R1 is a general model number hey use to identify their entry level shock.  They make this shock for many manufacture shock replacements.  Ducati / Yamaha / Kawasaki / Harley / Honda / etc…

Because the dimensions for the clevice and eyelet mounting points are specific, I was trying to avoid sifting through all the manufacture shocks.   It to mention length and shock throw are specific too.

Come on now, you've got to do some of the work.  :laughing4-giggles:

Wooboodoo has been off the radar here for a fair few years. Maybe you should contact wbd by using the personal message feature here. You could contact the manufacturer for specs (https://andreaniusa.com/nitron-3/), also. They might have an archive for reference. Brush up on you're Italian grammar.  :laughing1:  It is also fair to say that a replacement shock will have the same, or a very similar eye-to-eye length and spring diameter for clearance purposes.
Good luck on your search. If you're interested in high quality, look a Ted Porter's site for the TFX internal floating piston or reservoir shocks.

Appreciate the response and I realize this persons been off radar for some time.  Casting many lines with the hopes of getting a bite.   I’ll have to circle back to the Ted Porter site, I have their progressive fork springs on the way.

When I mentioned to Ted what I was attempting he suggested I stick with the yss shock,  but I want rebound and compression control in a shock with a remote reservoir

Look for the MG-CB-366-305-TRW-KRR
You can look up the size of the shock in the model reference.
Or just choose this shock if you dont mind having a yss (i personally am having a good time on yss)

For a replacement rear shock, I believe you could not do much better than the Wilbers.

But there's likely a strong placebo effect, given the price for these.

They custom make it for you, based upon your weight, riding style, etc.  Fully adjustable rebound / preload, etc, with external reservoir.

Thanks for this information.  I have dug around enough and will work with either YSS or Ohlins for a custom set up.

Once I get my assembly I’ll report back, but it really seems depending on the install of the retroride modification you can end up with different motion / leverage ratios.

This I understand can dramatically impact the way the shock and spring perform.

This looks awesome, are those GS wheels? And that custom exhaust is super cool.
You’ve kept the front end, not thinking of swapping for a GSXR or something?
I can see you already have the retro rides setup, what shock are you running now? Not happy with it since you’re in the market for a new one.
I am in the process of starting same build, hence my questions :)

I’ll take it, thank you.  It’s a Jonich wheel and after I get some time on the bike, I may decide to change out the front end.  I need to learn more about the impact of rake, trail, etc…

Yeah I have the retro rides conversion and wish I had done the sidewinder instead. I made the mistake of buying an Amazon kit and it has some sort of cheap shock I can’t get the specs on.  It feels awful. I am looking at an ohlins ttx36 ilx.  The only reason I am going that route is I found a guy who builds these and is willing to talk to me and educate me.  It’s surprising how many people simply won’t talk to you about their product and why things like motion ratio are important.

That exhaust is a great example of two guys passionate about the culture.  I couldn’t find a shop who would do the snake or coil feature under the seat.  Fabio Senesi, I found  on Facebook in Italy.  We talked through what I wanted, I took some measurements based on his guidance and built everything up until the Can.  That is a voodoo cafe racer can I had cut and reduced in length.

5e final look wouldn’t have been possible without the fine craftsmanship of Fabio, but we had to get through English being a 2nd language for me to understand what Fabio needed.

Jonich wheels are on the pricey side.
I Thought about purchasing them, until i found out you can run a r100gs/mystic front wheel without modifications (depending on current wheel) and r1100gs rear.

For the exhaust (Inquiry) and other fun parts you could check https://customcaferacerparts.com or ask mad exhausts what they can do for you

Awesome and thanks for your reply.
The retrorides available in EU is EU made, doesn’t seem any cheaper than sidewinder. The money is on the shock anyway. I am personally going with the EU made kit and was planning on the YSS shock but this thread is taking me another route. And now you’re mentioning Ohlins.

Your bike looks great, thanks for sharing. From what i hear, GSXR front swap are best cause of the fork length. Not affecting too much geometry. But i also have a lot to dig in.

it would. However on the monolever it would result in a small offset.
A paralever swap (like I have) would solve that which is a pretty easy swap. And still a fraction of the cost.
Just something to take into consideration.

I do not even know how many miles I have on my bike (long story), and it needs a lot of love. I really want to adjust the ride height as well. I may be completely wrong, but the center of gravity makes it difficult to really lean into turns on mountain roads. Part of that is me, but I took an RnineT out and it was so easy to throw into the turns. The RnineT was much lower to the ground, and that seems to have made all the difference. I supposedly have good tires on the bike.

Has anyone found a good write-up on changing out the front fork? It sounds like the GSXR is a good swap.
Title: Re: K1100RS by wooboodoo
Post by: Kaos on September 10, 2025, 12:42:49 PM
By adjusting the ride hight, you mean you want to lower it?
Gsxr swap is one of the most common swaps. Looks nice. Not so much when seals start leaking.
Anyway. By how much? Ive done 5 cm, of which 3 ish can be accomplished bij lowering the clamps over the stanchions Another by reducing the oil. Now the latter can cause wobble so i recommend doing it with w10.
No i dont recommend it. But its up to you.
I found that lowering the k (too much) did not improve corners. That came with a wider rear and larger ratio front wheel.
Now my front is lowered by about 2 cm. And my rear on a 420mm spring.
Title: Re: K1100RS by wooboodoo
Post by: In_Over_My_Head on September 10, 2025, 01:58:55 PM
Thanks for sharing your experience. Yeah, I was considering lowering it. Are there issues scraping in turns with the GSXR swap?

My goal is better handling. It sounds like I may want to look into changing the front wheel and rear tire for a larger option. With the lowering you've done did you notice the bike handled better? I get that too much is, well, too much.
Title: Re: K1100RS by wooboodoo
Post by: Kaos on September 10, 2025, 02:50:25 PM
I personally have not done the gsx swap. Simply because i mainly wanted to stick to original bmw parts.

When it comes to handling the lowering was for riding posture which in turn helps with handling. My personal preference for handling might not be te same as yours.
But throwing the bike around in corners itself and being able to have a beautiful lean angle changed/improved for me with the wider wheel and rounder tyre.
Eventho i build the bike to my liking it was still ment for riding and across countries.
