It's anything but compact!

That was BMW's apparent description not mine. They could've put the gearbox in the sump like the original Mini. Then it would've been compact.
Regards Martin.

Interesting, I was wondering about K too,  I wonder what R stands for.

I'm thinking it's a compact drivetrain for a longitudinal four cylinder and can be used independent of the frame. It's been used in boats and planes. If the gearbox was under like Soggz' two cylinder CX it would be higher. I wonder the length and height compared to the CX.

It's nifty too that the driveshaft uni joint and swing arm pivot around the same point,  that's not just compact but also means the splines don't slide while the swing arm jumps up and down over bumps,  so reducing wear.

But I won't say less wear than a CX as I can then see Soggz jumping up and down.

BMW has gone loco with their naming conventions of late, especially with their cars.  it used to be simple and clear.  "325" meant a 3 series car with a 2.5l engine.  now...who knows what they are.

for bikes, first letter was engine configuration.  numbers after letter engine size.  letters after that the style of bike.

K - longitudinal cylinders
R - horizontal opposed cylinders.

but then....they kept the "K" and put a transverse slant 4 in a bike...the K1200/1300.  oops.  broke the template.  changed their minds a few years later and called the Slant 4's  "S" bikes...the S1000RR, R and XR, and dropped the "K" designation altogether.

F - the transverse slant 2cyl rotax engine bikes F800GT, G, GS
G - the single cyl micro bikes G310R, GS

Could be worse, we don't have to deal with the alphabet soup nomenclature of Harleys.
