Title: 93 k1100 LT starting issues
Post by: Deepnoizer on August 18, 2019, 09:43:24 AM
I'm about to give up, all the forums searching can't get me any further. Time to ask for help.

A lot of work has been done to this bike, most of it before it ended up in my hands, very much a learning experience.
(I exchanged some messages with Caveman but I think I exhausted the list of his suggestions)

Problem: Takes a lot of effort to start 4-5 times than it often dies time or two while trying to keep up RPM.
One its hot after letting it run or after a ride, starts instantly.

I just don’t trust this bike to go more than few blocks around house I would love to get it mechanically solid so I can move on, with all the other plans I have for it.

There is fair amount of noise around the back of the engine, I’m 70% sure its from area of the exhaust valve. Did not look inside valve cover, this might be next task.
I also hear something from alternator area, not big deal but I got set of monkey nuts ready to have a look.

Cold Start: (I realized I don’t have good video, will add one when its actually cold)
Video of start after it ran for 1 minute, took like 6 attempts this morning: https://youtu.be/pInp9KoOaXA (https://youtu.be/pInp9KoOaXA)
Smoke after cold start and idling for a minute or so: https://youtu.be/Y_JFngGoKzc (https://youtu.be/Y_JFngGoKzc)
Warm Start: https://youtu.be/qy7kZBI3EIA (https://youtu.be/qy7kZBI3EIA)

What I did so far:

- Tank flushed, there was some crap there, (had some fuel I did not trust, spent one winter outdoors without stabilizer).
- Replaced filter, cleaned pump basked.
- All fuel lines replaced, even installed quick disconnect on lines for easy tank removal.
- Pressure tested on rail, 35 PSI video: https://youtu.be/NRtN2-JfHac (https://youtu.be/NRtN2-JfHac)
- Tested injectors for pattern, looks good, replaced anyways with 4 jet ones. – old ones looked clean.
- Wire plugs replaced with new ones.
- Compression tested 110, 105, 102, 110.
- Plugs replaced with NGK, old ones looked decent, still have them.
- HAL sensors, I found noted wires in the casing, almost looks like wires were pinched in the center before (PIC). I considered soldering new wires, but it looks very close to sensor itself. Bit the bullet, replaced with new one.

- All plugs tested for spark; they look OK for my inexperienced eye. (used old Bosh plugs)

- New battery, alternator replaced not long ago, charges well. (few months scratching my head not knowing about having to have charging light or resistor).
- Air sensors, tested, got new once just in case. Air box has been removed, tried to placing it in various places including air intakes, no change.
- Coolant sensor, tested, got new one. Tried to start with sensor not submerged (did not see need to drain radiator). no change, also tested wire to ECU.
- Got second ECU from ebay, same model number matching, runs identical on both.
- Does not look like I lose oil, changed about a year ago.
- I don’t see anything floating on top of oil in inspection window.
- I’m not expert on smelling exhaust but I’m quite sure its gasoline smoke.

I’m quite sure I’m forgetting few things I did but I’m seriously not sure where to go from here. I’m determined and I love this bike but this is getting to the point that I’m ready to give up.

What next?

Thank you in advance.

greetings...

thanks for the videos... means a lot...

needs exorcism... which i just performed remotely... and now a cleansing... if it were mine... id renew the ignition heat sink then id getts 1 bottle of marvel mystery oil and 3 bottles  of techron injector cleaner...

put 1/2 bottle of marvel mystery oil in a full tank of no corn ethyl... ride it till near empty... go 1 bottle of techron in full tank of no corn ethyl...  repeat with techron 2 more times...

its about a 800 mile day or back to back 400 miles days... dont let it sit more than overnight during this cleansing...

after all that... ride it long fast often... cause it just needs miles...

Herd you loud and clear our Techron preacher, you are almost like the Windex guy from Big Far Greek Wedding.
Got fair does of it in the tank for a while now, gonna ride harder to go trough it.

You sire appear to be onto something.
Removed the heat sink and it did not have good contact. Gonna get some supplies and reapply.
Bonus, found bat wire that appears should I think, go from starter mount bolt to bottom of battery tray.

Thx !

If anyone knows what this wire is I would appreciate.

I have one end on starter mount and other side on the bottom of battery tray, of what I assume is same wire.

Compression tested 110, 105, 102, 110.
What next?
The highest of these numbers is 10% below BMW's Poor compression level specification. Was this test done with the throttle wide open? I think you should check the valve clearances and do a leak down test.

It was not done with throttle full open, I did not know was supposed to before you even said that.
Never quite intended to do the test anyways, was just something that sounded like good idea while changing plugs.
I do intended to check the valve clearances, waiting for clearance gauges to arrive.
