Title: Removing instrument cluster, 1991 K75S

I've pulled the upper fairing and removed the allen screw that secures the plastic cover over where the wiring harness plugs into the instrument cluster.  The cover appears to be stuck.

Does it slide in place or pull off without sliding it?  Not wanting to need a replacement...

That can be hell, especially if your personal balance is compromised. A gin pole is useful.

The K75s has a different system see the attached picture. You are nearly there. There are 4 recessed Allen bolts (4) that go through the alloy counterweight they are fiddly and a bit of a pain to remove. I have varying lengths of Allen keys and Allen key sockets which help, find a length that works and remove all 4. The counterweight (5) will need to be held or it will fall when the last screw is removed.  You can now remove the screw that holds the cover over the connector plugs and then carefully pull both plugs out. You now have the pod free.

 It is a good idea while you have it out to remove the back and carefully scrape the connector pins with a scalpel or small sharp hobby knife and use DexoIT as a final treatment. It helps to tape the counter weight in position with a wrap of insulation tape to hold in in place while you replace the 4 Allen screws. I also smeared heavy silicone grease around the outside of the connectors to try and keep out any moisture.

I'm not even to the point where i can unplug the harness. 

I was asking how the plastic harness cover that's held in place by one allen bolt comes off.  Does it slide down within the  instrument housing to come off, or do I pull it straigbt off?

Once you undo the screw it just pulls off on mine.
