Title: Spark Plug Dress-Up Cover Question
Post by: BryanD on March 08, 2019, 04:32:12 PM
OK, so I noticed when I first purchased my 95 K1100rs that the little "BMW 4-Valve" logo spark plug cover panel was not on my bike.  So I've been looking for one for some time and finally ran into one at a decent price.

When I went to put it on, I noticed that a 5mm screw wouldn't start, so I figured it was a 4mm.  When I appropriated the screws, to my surprise, they slid right into the hole.  $%#@$, too small!  So what the heck?!  5mm too big and 4mm too small. Thinking 4.5mm now.

But WAIT....  I checked the holes in the valve cover and to my surprise, they had never been tapped for bolts....

So now I'm wondering, did the 1100rs even have the cover installed in the FIRST place?  I mean the belly pan covers everything for all intents and purposes.  Did they not put that panel on the RS?  Anyone know?

Thanks, johnny.  Somehow I knew you would be the one to answer.

I know that there is at least ONE in the nation that has one now...  :)

The MAX BMW parts fiche lists spark plug covers as being available for the LT but not for the RT. That seems to imply that the RT wasn't drilled to accommodate them. The LT covers—just for the spark plugs—is over 150USD.  :euro

Yeah, I'm kind of understanding that now.  But if you think about it, it seems a bit "unfinished" in that regard.  You have 4 really nice mounting holes in your cover and these ugly, uncovered wires without one.

I guess BMW felt no one would ever care since the RS fairing does indeed cover all but the very tail end of this area.

Oh well....  I have one now.  Cost me 13.85 plus 11 ship.  And $4 for the bolts and washers.  And a few lost hairs from scratching my head.
