Title: Speedo Question
Post by: awshucks on October 17, 2011, 06:19:16 PM
Ever since spline lube early summer on '85 K100 RS, my speedo occasionally wouldn't start working w/o a finger nail few taps on the glass/plastic face.

This w/e, I was cruising long at about 60 indicated, looked down and the needle was at 0.  I tapped the side of housing w/ a pocket knife, still at 60 and it started working again.

Any guesses what/how much this one will be?

Click here: Fix a flaky or inoperative K bike speedometer (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=449.0)

Also check the wiring harness connector for it.

I'd definitely start with the 2 wire connector coming from the speedo's sensor. It's happened to me before that I unplugged it, plugged it back in and got the same symptoms you have now. Do that again, maybe clean the contacts up this time, and it may just fix itself-- like mine.

Not 100% sure, but think odo goes at same time.  I'll have to check it out in a.m. if it acts up.

everytime i would wash the bug or ride in the rain my speedo n odo would run slow for days n sometime weeks... then all of a sudden it would be ok...

i always thought it was the sensor wire cause both ran slow....

Gee, How time flys!  I wanted to let y'all know, it appears to have been a little crap on speedo pickup in final drive.  I'm several excursions w/ it, and no more problems, knock on wood.  Thanks for the help!

Good to hear.  And it's always nice when people come back and update tech threads.  Thanks.

I just ride down hills backwards.

LOl, better man than me!  Speaking of hills, my gravel drive goes up while doing a 180 degree turn.  I could handle it easily on airhead, but K w/ higher center of gravity was a thrill, even w/o washouts from rain.

I had a 30" by 5" deep sidewalk dugout and poured in middle of it, all 403".  At first it was like trying to keep the bike on a railroad track. ;D  This is the easy part, two more curves, the last a sharp 90.

So why do you suppose tapping the speedo face worked if it was the sensor?  May still have a flakey connection in the instrument pod, sometimes they go dormant depending on moon phases.

Good question, haven't a clue.  It was light/white colored non-magnetic right on what I assume was the magnet, may have jiggled around there?

I know, wishful thinking, I so don't want to have to tear into this, lol.

Did a 500 miler this w/e, tap tap tap.  Trip goes out w/ speedo, didn't check odo, but would guess it does too.  I got 40 mpg two up [w/ kid].

Will have to address this sooner than later, idiot lights for 7L and 3L are a joke.  I need that trip odo.
